Al Ain fans still celebrating their club’s Pro-League triumph over the weekend will have added reason to cheer after chief executive Carlo Nohra revealed he was “very confident” striker Asamoah Gyan would sign a permanent deal this summer.

The Ghanaian striker has been an unmitigated success since arriving in the Garden City on a season-long loan from English Premier League side Sunderland last September, scoring 22 times in all competitions despite missing a month of the season to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Gyan did not add to his 17 Pro-League goals at the Tahnoun Bin Mohammed on Friday as Al Jazira were beaten 2-0 to ensure an unprecedented 10th UAE title, but played a significant role in both of Yasser Al Qahtani’s goals.

“I’m very confident that he will be staying,” Nohra told Sport360°. “He has indicated on a number of occasions that he would like to remain at the club.

"There is a loan agreement that we need to work out with Sunderland, but what is really important is that the player wants to be here and we would like to keep him. So now it’s about working out the logistics of a transfer. That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, but the seeds are there for us to ensure that this becomes a long-term deal.”

Al Ain’s success was by no means built on the performances of Gyan alone though, as their new coach Cosmin Olaroiu brought in a total of nine players last summer. The likes of Gyan, Mirel Radoi, Ignacio Scocco, Yasser Al Qahtani and Helal Saeed proved invaluable acquisitions as The Boss were transformed from relegation fodder to champions within just 12 months.

Nohra, who only arrived at the club last October, believes it is vital that the current squad and their Romanian coach are retained next season, although he anticipates an anxious summer transfer window. “You can see that this group have worked well together and they have achieved an awful lot this season. I don’t think anybody would want to disrupt that.

"Whether they stay together or not is up to a multitude of factors that will reveal themselves throughout the coming months. Nobody relishes loss in football, but it does happen and we’ll know more when the transfer window opens,” he said.

Nohra, though, backed club chairman Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan and the board of directors to do whatever is needed to ensure Al Ain maintain their success. He added: “I’m sure the president as well as the senior management and the board of the directors will do whatever they feel is necessary to preserve the pedigree of the club, irrespective of what was achieved.

“They adopted the same approach last year when we were at the other end of the table, and through their vision and insight to bring in this coach and the players, they turned things around. So, moving forward I’m sure they would want to build on the success of this season and will take whatever decisions are necessary.”

If the buying club do not come up with a realistic price we should just bite the bullet and stick him in the stiffs and make him train on his own. I feel sure he will soon get sick, having to make ends meet on a reported 35-40 grand a week instead of 200 grand. It's about time clubs started getting the upper hand and put these prima donnas in their place. Rant over.<grr>

That's not a rant mate as a lot of us feel the same way, we have to recoup at least what we paid for him.

    It's utter bollocks imo.

He cost us £13m and we didn't want him to go. He is under contract and we don't need to cash in.

They could have him for £10m but not a penny less.

That only works when the player is a crucial part of the team and performances. Gyan isn't even crucial to his current team let alone ours.

If he thinks he is going to get a cut price deal he is severely mistaken. If we are to lose £4m on the deal, I'd be happy to see him play reserve team football at Hetton every week and pay him his £40k per week to see out his contract. Lets see how long he remains cocky losing out on £160k per week and playing in a pit village ground - albeit with a much bigger crowd. Lol
