Former Portsmouth manager Guy Whittingham has announced that he has decided to mutually terminate his contract and leave his position of first team coach with Crawley Town. The League One club announced that the decision for Whittingham to depart the club was mutually reached after the decision to not renew his contract that expires at the end of the season. Whittingham has left Crawley In other news at the club, club secretary Chris Hough and club physio James Barker have both been relieved of their duties. Crawley chief executive Michael Dunford told the clubâs website âIt is always sad when employees leave the football club. I would like to thank all three for their efforts on behalf of Crawley Town and to wish them all the best for their future careers.â Whittingham had joined the club in December, a month after being sacked by Portsmouth who decided to employ former Crawley manager Richie Baker who himself was sacked two days after Whittingham was. Would Guy return to FP to run our Academy, if Awfs is appointed First Team Manager, I wonder ?
Would Awfs want Guy to run the Academy? He didn't appear to have much to do with it from what I can gather. Remember when Guy was sacked and AA took over for 3 games, he gave Jack Whatmough a start and said that he had kept telling Guy that he was ready but Guy didn't even consider him. Guy is apparently a brilliant coach - definitely not managerial material - but I can't imagine him coming back here for some while yet. I do hope he isn't out of work long though.
Guy will always be a legend as a player and as a loyal servant of the club but I doubt we will see him return anytime soon. I think 'brilliant coach' is a bit of an exaggeration otherwise he would be snapped up by a club higher up the league but I do believe that coaching is more his strength than management, whereas with Andy I would say the opposite. I detected a bit of friction between the two of them this season, from what both of them said at various times - or maybe didn't say. Also, we never had an explanation as to why Alan Knight suddenly left the coaching set up, although David Coles was a much better option (thanks for getting rid of him RB). The truth is that just because someone is a legend from the past does not make them right for a coaching or management role, so a continual list of past heroes smacks of rose (blue) tinted spectacles to me. I stand to be corrected, of course!
I think Guy will get another coaching job somewhere if he wants it, if not he'll look for a managers job and maybe get that, but I cant see him coming back here.
