Yes - it's only a few sparklers and firework food for the kids. No different to some Jewish and muslim kids having Santa Claus - it's a lot easier to just go with the flow sometimes!
A lot of spotty geeks and hackers the world over celebrate it, I was unaware catholics weren't also spotty geeks and hackers please log in to view this image
Burning an effigy of the pope can only be a good thing but I wish they didn't make so many banging noises, got a shaking dog under my desk.
In the 1980's the GLC banned the term "Guy Fawkes night" and replaced it with the wholly less sectarian "bonfire night". Ken Livingstone said "this innovative move is to allow people who aren't sectarian bigots to enjoy pyrotechnics as well". please log in to view this image The Tory government of the day reacted to the beel of the bigots (they didn't use beel then, they used "rage") and led moves to disband the GLC before the annual celebrations of hate could be further eroded which is why there is no GLC and anti Catholic fireworks retain their original hate filled names like Catherine Wheel, Roman candle etc etc. It also allows people on the internet to have this discussion every year. I seem to recall I cracked a funny this time last year and it got a laugh.....I don't think it was a pity laugh either. I think it was a heartfelt display of real human emotion.....good times.... Goooooood times. Interestingly, I am sure you'll agree the jewel in the crown of Haringey's bonfire night celebrations are held at Alexandra Palace. The mayor of Haringey (or Harringay as it was then...changed to placate the homophobes) said in 1981 that "not since 1666 have the people of London been so sorely affected by the dangers of fire as we have been today as we stand in the ashes of the people's palace (see below)..the people of Harringay (sic) can now see how sorely our Roman Catholic residents must have viewed our hateful extravagances annually on the 5th November...with this in mind, we shall no longer celebrate Guy Fawkes day, we shall celebrate as a community with a bonfire and fireworks. Every year we shall meet here, allowing teenagers to mug other teenagers....regardless of race, colour or creed.... And we shall do so..... As one" please log in to view this image
We set some fireworks off on Saturday night, I reckon the neighbours would have been fairly pissed off with the racket we made. Some of these things are far too powerful for public use.
We've had Diwali displays round here as well as Guy Fawkes Dorty. The Hindus are, on the whole, usually pretty quiet and keep themselees to themselves. Then lo and behold they spend 2 nights turning the area into a very passable impression of World War 3 - **** knows what they use but if Hans Blix was on the case he'd have a field day.......
Our friends buy them and we chip in, Dan. we had some fairly mundane ones but then we had five rockets which were powerful followed by one of those multi-shot affairs. My mate is a twat for setting the last one of in the garden, I thought the windows were gonna go in ffs
I agree about the public use thing though - some of these things seem to be way too powerful. i'm amazed there are not more casualties
Absolutely, Dan. I'm sure my mate has a thing about setting things off, he's always a very keen volunteer when the fireworks are on the go. He set one off in his doorway once.....smoke and debris everywhere
Fuxake A bloke used to stand outside our local and let them off. Think he's dead now..................
