Toon star happy in England but has ambitions to play in Italy

Jonas Gutierrez has revealed he would one day like to play in Italy, although he admits to being happy at Newcastle for now.

The Argentina winger played in Spain with Mallorca before joining the Magpies back in 2008.

Although Gutierrez, 27, still has two more years to run on his current deal at St James' Park, he has serious ambitions of playing in Serie A.
    Love

"I would love to play in Italy. It would be good to go back to Argentina in a few years and say I have played in the best three leagues in the world," said Gutierrez.

"That would be a great achievement for me. But I do not care about that right now, it is something for the future, not an immediate priority.

"If I get the opportunity in the future, I might want to try it to see how I fared there but I am not thinking about that now, maybe later.

"I am 27 but have not really got my future mapped out. I am enjoying my career and I'm not thinking too much about the future. What I can say is that I want to play a few more years in Europe before returning home to Argentina.

"I had three years in Spain, have had three here and have got another two years here and I'm really happy but you never know what might happen."

"I would love to play in Italy. It would be good to go back to Argentina in a few years and say I have played in the best three leagues in the world."
Jonas Gutierrez on wanting to play in Italy Quotes of the week

Despite reported interest from Lazio, Gutierrez admits his main concern is to help Newcastle build on their successful first season back in the top flight.

"All I am thinking about is that I am really happy in this league," he added.

"More and more Argentineans are coming to play in England because they know it is the best, just like they have done in Italy for years.

"When I was young, I always wanted to play in the English league and I am really happy to be here and I'm enjoying it.

"I prefer playing my football here, it is more competitive although not necessarily better. The Spanish, English and Italian leagues are all good in their own right, just different."

Can't see him wanting to end his career here to be honest. He'll probably have another 2 years or so here, finish his contract, then move. Can't particularly blame him. If we're moving in the right direction he may be surplus to requirements in a few years anyway... ;)

Plus, it's not as if he's after more money or moving just for that, like AC did.. and possibly Jose, depending on where he ends up..

Nothing wrong with this. His reasons seem genuine and are more personal. If he did get the choice to play for Lazio or someone of that ilk in Italy then he would be silly not too take it. Besides, he might not get a sniff of the 1st team come the time he leaves anyway.

  6. Yes but i'd prefer he and Colo stayed for the rest of their careers along with Nolan and Barton and become legends.

It's personal reasons that he will leave, which is fair enough. I never expected him to end his career here, same with Colo and Nolan, if we progress they'll become surplus to requirements and I'd fully expect them to leave for first team football. At least he wont leave with bad intentions like AC.

The Bundesliga is in Germany, not Italy Jonas.

If we get a good price for him I'm happy to sell him whenever really. I'd rather we kept hold of him though.

Meh, I'd like to think in the long run we can get a better winger than Jonas, can't see him staying for the rest of his career lol, nor would I really want him to

Good on him, saying outright he'll stay to the end of his contract then wants to go to a big club. It's his career he will see out his contract; unlike other nobs who leave halfway through one.

  15. I don't think he's an excellent player, but him and Colo have both improved alot as the season has progressed, Colo especially.

I still would like to sign better than Jonas but i have no problems in keeping him, and i've started to like him.

If only he could cross well more often.

He's been good, and i like him. Good alround midfielder. <ok>
