<laugh> this story is laughable, granted it's in the Daily Fail but a number of other sites are picking the story up and pedaling off as reality.

For starters WTF would we sell to one of our direct rivals in the league?
I say this as I think we can stay in and around where we currently sit in the table and so will Villa.
Guthrie is also getting a game and doing well for us and fits what we are looking for in terms of age & wage.

Unless it's stupid money I really can't see him going anywhere.

It also doesn't help that he's injured either <doh>

    Let the Transfer lies begin!!!

Villa prepare to move earlier than expected for Newcastle's Guthrie to replace Jenas
Newcastle's Danny Guthrie has emerged as the man Alex McLeish wants to replace the injured Jermaine Jenas at Aston Villa.

England midfielder Jenas saw his career at Villa Park cut short after he was ruled out for the entire campaign with an achilles injury.
The 28-year-old has therefore returned to parent club Tottenham to continue his rehabilitation, leaving McLeish short of options in the middle of the pitch.
And now having been forced to operate on tight budget since American backer Randy Lerner tightened the purse-strings, Vills' Scottish boss has turned to cut-price Guthrie.

The former Liverpool boy's contract at St James' Park is up in the summer, and despite currently being sidelined, the fact that the player would be available on the cheap has got Villa interested.

The 24-year-old is out for a month with a groin injury picked up in the defeat to Chelsea, which was his fifth start of the season.

I'm not going to come out and say it's rubbish because I have no idea what Ashley's thinking, and he makes decisions that continue to baffle me no matter how much I vow not to be surprised by anything that happens at this club any more. The papers may be taking advantage of this to get stories but that's just the way it is now.

Up untill his injury Guthrie has put in display's worthy of him being considered a starter. I doubt we'l let him go unless he asks or we're offered more than his value.

If we have to sell DG in order to keep Tiote then I'm for it.

We're too thin on the ground to be letting players like Guthrie go.

With Colo and Willo out we'd be in a spot of trouble without having the likes of Kadar, and Guthrie is going to be needed (when fit) as back up for Tiote. Heaven knows we're having no luck with injuries to first teamers and we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot letting fringe players go.

  6. This <ok>

I remember us cursing letting Routledge go when we were forced to play 3-5-2 against Stoke and playing our fullbacks as wingers.

    I agree...

While I'm far from negative on Guthrie, I'm not one of those who thinks his performances are even close to Cheik's. I'm glad we no longer play him in the Barton slow right-mid role, because he's shocking at that, but his performances in centre-midfield to me dictate a fee of around 4-6million, probably the lower end if his contract is up soon.

Guthrie and Lovenkrands out, Cabral, a decent centre back and a little-known french forward in, would be a decent window for us. Though I see Colo and Tiote being sold for squillions, and us spending f-all on replacements, with some useless loan deals to supplement the squad.

Hell no. We're not in the position to be selling anyone at the minute bar say Smith. Everyone else stays, unless they're replaced.

Plus, I don't wanna keep bloody selling our English players!!

Was just browsing over some old programmes and I put my hand on a Leeds one with Smithy on the cover and thought, oh no don't let this be an omen.

Don't rate him very highly but he has done ok this year and looks a bit fitter. If he could stop picking up so many injuries and maintain his current levels when backing up, then I'd be happy to see him stay as cover. I'm not convinced with him at all though in terms of application. The problem will be is he going to sign a contract because if not the club will want to sell. I think he would be pretty easy to replace but its not as if our squad is overflowing at present. As long as he was replaced I wouldn't be that bothered, but its sometimes easier to stick with what you've got. I think we know this regime see it differently though and of late its worked for them. Personally I think your luck eventually runs out with this policy and you need to build something, but as I say its difficult to argue with their policy at present.

He still hasn't signed an extension with us, if he's not going to sign maybe Ashley just wants to get what he can for him rather than let him leave for free? It's possible.

    Haha, hopefully not!

I like the way everyone still calls him Smithy even though I'd bloody hate it to see him on the pitch. Even my dad, a Leeds fan, still refers to him as Smithy all the time and he would NOT want him back.

this story has raised it's head due to his contract running out and the fact he hasn't signed a new one expect more of the same about him and colo in the coming weeks.

Aint that the truth..................if there is anyone who should go I agree it should be Smith but we would get F*** all for him, getting him off the wage bill would be a result though

Agree with this. Now he's injured he can at least focus on tieing up a new deal with us or say he wants to go.

Probably just seeing his contract out to be honest, he'll be gone soon, doubt we'll sell him. Will free up a good amount of wages for a couple of frenchies!

Dunno why, think he could still do a job for a lower league Championship team. You woulda thought someone would come in for his experience. Wages are a massive stumbling block though. Don't think he'll go back to Leeds, they're on the up.
