KEVIN NOLAN will take the place of injured Danny Guthrie tomorrow – but the Shropshire-born player was singled out for praise by manager Alan Pardew.

For Guthrie played through the pain barrier against Man United following a knock sustained at Aston Villa earlier this month.

Pardew said: “It’s a big boost for the team that Kevin is coming back.

“But with Danny Guthrie we knew on Tuesday that if he played, he was going to feel worse later.

“Perhaps he knew that Kev was going to play on Saturday, and you have to admire that he put himself up to play.

“He is now wearing a protective boot as it caused him so many problems.

“He might not play again this season due to the efforts he put in on Tuesday.

“So you have to admire that from the boy.”

Pardew is likely to include Joey Barton, Nolan, Cheick Tiote and Jonas Gutierrez in a strong midfield.

He said: “Unfortunately for Blackpool this is the strongest squad I’ve had since Spurs away in December.”

And he is acutely aware that it could be party time should Newcastle see off the Tangerines. Pardew said: “We have got a chance to get to 43 points and that is safe.

“It’s where we want to be as quickly as possible, and we can be there Saturday night.

“And if we are, I expect the city to be lively and in relaxed frame of mind knowing the team are going to be playing Premier League football next season.”

Certainly gone up in my estimations. Gave up his season to play when we needed him, knowing we'd have Nolan back next week.

Wow. Even a more impressive performance consedering he played through the pain! Brilliant from the lad! Hope he continues his development here and next season he can be really useful off the bench/cover/competition. I always thought he'll come back strong despite woeful performances(mainly Wigan at home & West Brom away). There's some degree of potential there IMO.

I doubt your location is so 'confidential' anymore!

Brilliant stuff from Guthrie, really like the lad. Hope when he recovers he can continue to play as he has in our last couple of games, will really be pushing for the first team. We've got a lot of strength in CM.

I think Guthrie will play even less chance of playing next season when Gosling is back, which is a shame.

True, but I think Gosling will be used on the wing more if needed, as Guthrie doesnt look comfortable out wide. I think I would also rather gamble on Gosling as RB cover ahead of Perch and Raylor.

^ Yeah agree. Very versatile young player. Cover full-back areas, play as a box-to-box and out wide which is great. Unfortunately he can't play upfront :(

Maybe we should keep him slightly injured on a permanent basis, if it gets performances like that out of him.

Hats off to him. I have always been a fan of him but admittedly, I didn't think he was the sort of player to play through the pain barrier. Hopefully he has proven to everyone that he can play at this level and will get even better.

One thing that annoyed me is when Pardew said "Perhaps he knew Nolan would be playing on Saturday anyway". Which implies that no matter how well Guthrie played, Nolan was always going to return to the team in his place anyway. I think Guthrie was really good and I was looking forward to seeing him get a prolonged run in the team in his preferred position.

To be fair, most players wont expect to keep the captain out of the starting 11.

Yeah I think he came on in injury time with the draw against the mackems. Of course he then had another knock in training, not sure how long he is out for now.
