GUS Poyet is still quietly hopeful of landing £14m target Fabio Borini, despite the Italian attacker jetting off on Liverpoolâs pre-season tour. The Sunderland head coach confirmed at the weekend that the two clubs had agreed a fee and the only thing that remained was for the player to agree personal terms. And the fact that Borini then headed off to America with Liverpool rather than Sunderland with his agent sparked fears that the striker had turned his back on Wearside. But speaking to reporters after Sunderlandâs 1-0 win over Carlisle United at Brunton Park last night, Poyet was relaxed about the situation. âI can assure you though that there is no disappointment on my part that it has not happened yet,â he said. âIt is normal. âAnd with all respect to the media, they do not know everything that is going on. âIt is not for me to explain but it is not just a question of Fabio wanting to come or not. âThere are many, many things to look at and unfortunately I cannot comment on those. âWe are involved in negotiations and you never know how long that can take. âThereâs nothing new to report as things stand but we are still hoping to close the deal completely.â The ball is now in the court of the player himself and his agent and the others they are negotiating with but Poyet feels that a lot of things are in Sunderlandâs favour. âItâs up to Fabio,â he said. âWe have been clear, everything is fine, thereâs no doubt about his connection with our club and me and him get along fine, so there is no reason for it not to happen.â âI would love to know how long it will take to sort out but all I can tell you is that things are changing every day. âWe have targets that we are looking for, we have other options, but we have an agreement with Liverpool and we will do everything possible to get Fabio to the club first. âIf Fabio does not come, it does not set us back, we would move on - we are not a one-player team. âBut I hope the fact that we are after players like him shows the quality of players that we are trying to bring to the club. âIt shows we are committed and prepared to spend money. âBut now we are looking to move on with other players too because it is not just about one player it is about the whole squad and there are other areas to look at. âHeâs a player that everyone wants to see but our transfer work this summer is not just about one player, itâs about the squad and there are other situations we need to work out.â Poyet stressed though that the pursuit of Borini would not hold up Sunderlandâs transfer work in other areas. âObviously things become clearer once we know what will happen with Fabio,â he said. âBut we are still able to progress in other areas and it is important that we do.â
I hope this is the case, but I am not sure, it has dragged on far to long, and we have put far to much time, money and energy into this one target.
Liverpools tour looks better then sunderlands he will join us don't worrie, It's just a mini holiday to America for him.
We have Alf, Scocco, Diakite etc with us and they're expected to leave the club. People need to remember that there isn't a big 'waiting room' where players 'on the move' sit around with their agents. Borini, Alonso etc need to have a full & proper pre-season for whichever team they might be turning out for. If Borini eventually signs and turns up unfit we'd be saying we'd pissed £12 million up the wall.
That's exactly what I'm saying ........ players have to play & train where they are at any moment in time.
and if you were Fabio with a last chance to impress the manager and get some champions league football this season or come back to us and face a scrap at the wrong end of the table or (at best) mid-table mediocrity you would want to give the champions league option as good a go as you can - if when BR makes it clear he`s not part of the plans he`ll have to decide what he wants to do, if he is going to leave I am quietly confident he`ll come to us.
We got 3 freebies in early on without anybody having a scooby. It's pretty bloody obvious our hunt for Fabio isn't a smokescreen but I am pretty bloody sure we will be talking to other players, agents etc in the event we do fail to get him.
