Ex-boss Gus Poyet points-out that we have a deep-seated problem at our club, but doesn't know what it is!Could it be that we pay our players differing wages?I might be barking-up the wrong tree, but why don't we pay all the first-team squad the same wages and then a lesser amount for the reserves?Any thoughts?

I think a big part of the problem is that other teams have better players than us

I'm 58 and supported Sunderland since I was 5.......if there's something wrong at the heart of the club, its pretty much been there all that time....(not withstanding about 4 seasons of relative success)

If we had an owner that came in and started pouring money in, and it coincided with having a manager like Moyes who knows his stuff in charge then that's how we'll progress. I don't think we're going to do much more than we are with Short.

I'm 67 and have supported Sunderland as long as I can remember and I totally agree with Gus.
We seem to be different to other teams.
I remember my father telling me that the club take the supporters for granted, they aren't really bothered about winning anything and even if they are relegated, a reasonable winning team will see the crowds come back.
I think that the vast majority of fans these days are premier league fans and if we go down we will go into free fall .
Hope I'm wrong , that's just my opinion.

My dad said the same thing Blind....I also agree with your prediction about if/when we go down. I genuinely fear for Sunderland. We desperately need a new owner now.

Its a great club, nothing wrong with it that a few good signings wouldn't put right, then build on that, its a good manager we need tbh, one that can see out his contract would be a start, thought Big Sam was the man, now I hope it is Big Dave who gives us the stability we need, I think he might just do it.

Used to be a standing joke in the 60s that if the club were short of money they got relegated and the gate receipts soared - doubt that would happen now though!

Don't think it's anything to do with wages. It's lack of investment and manager turnover imo.

Moyes does not know his stuff and there has not been ONE manager at this club since 1937 who could challenge for a top 6 position !, they have all been poor with poor owners, well here we are we knew in the summer the top target was a striker but don't get one in, and the signings by Moyes have been awfull, Get Sam back on Monday please and give him £150 m or else we are doomed.

I'm 60 and at a loss for this repeating mess we find ourselves in - we don't seem to have recovered from the early 50's massive fine from FA plus our geographical location - up north out on a limb.
The dark ones are on a main access O by air road and rail - just not so easy for the southerners to get here.
All in all I blame our inept council

Apart from Kaboul these are the same players BSA had.

The players are unprofessional c*nts who should be sacked. They arent f*cking trying.

PS, anybody who wants to argue with this. F*ck off cos I'm right and your wrong.

I'm just reading Dennis Tueart's autobiography and he says that a lack of ambition after the FA Cup win is what led to him leaving. He also mentions similar lack of ambition after Stokoe got us promoted a season or so later. Its tempting to see this as some kind of long term problem that's dogged us for 40 years or more but I don't think that's true. Bob Murray showed ambition and if it weren't for a lack of funds and a misguided managerial appointment we could have kicked on. I think there was sufficient ambition in the early years of the Bruce period too. I do agree with Poyet though, there is something wrong.

You look at clubs like Bournemouth and Swansea and they are over reaching themselves. But they are where the are because they are well run clubs, well organised, and with a clear vision of how they want to play and how they want to operate. Swansea have consistently appointed managers who could build on the work of the previous one. There's our first problem there- Short has chopped and changed, appointing managers with differing approaches, he's implemented and then scrapped the director of football model without giving it time to bed in. Lack of investment aside, there is no clear vision of how we should be organised. This has been exacerbated by the poor decision making of the people in positions of responsibility.

This isn't the only problem though. For 5 or 6 seasons now I've felt that our team have displayed extremely fragile confidence. Players and managers have come and gone but that never seems to go. What's the cause of that? I also wonder about the number of highly-rated players who arrive here and either flop (Angeleri, Scocco, Riveros) or who seem to fall out of favour for no particular reason (Giaccherini, Lens). These are the kind of players who could really improve us. And don't even get me started on the Alvarez situation or the decision not to bring M'Vila in over the summer.

The club- any club- needs strong leadership and despite Short's quiet and mysterious persona, he doesn't seem to provide that. He just surrounds himself with people who advise him poorly.

Clueless owner, clueless board and ****e recruitment.

The owner doesn`t need to know anything about running a football club provided he`s got people below him who do. He hasn`t. Been the same for years. No lessons learned.

Yep, every manager under Short has said there's a problem somewhere, I think it's a case of they all know what it is but can't say it publicly.

I definitely think Short and his boardroom are the biggest problem.
