Saw this on wsc web site: http://www.wsc.co.uk/content/view/7305/38/ Do people still see Gunny as a hero? For me the playing days more than make up for the manager bit.
I think most Norwich fans still see him as a legend! Just goes to show how moronic some of the posters on the Pink Un are. Clearly they are the same people who phone up canary call to moan every week and prefer us to be doing badly than well as they can moan more.
Great goalkeeper, not a great manager. Other than one bad result (Without which, we'd have no Lambert and no Premier League) we need to remember he didn't really do that badly at all (Sacked after a 4 - 0 victory!) and he brought in Grant Holt too!
Gunny is a legend and did what he could because he loves this club He brought grant holt FACT! Notice the comments are from the pinkun message board, theyre all a bunch of twats over there
I agree it'is a shocking way to treat a club legend, he will always be a hero to me, we all make mistakes in life, probably Gunny's biggest mistake was in thinking he had the ability to manage. In the first comment at the bottom of the article, I laughed out loud at the Piers Morgan reference.
Hopefully he doesnt read the pink un and see such twattish comments as it wouldnt be representative of what Norwich fans think of him. 99% of people in Carrow Road still love him.
"Still, he's not as disliked as Roeder" What a stupid comment, made me angry that. Gunny should never be compared to that guy. Ok, badly judged foray into management it may have been, but what an ambassador for this club he's been. Another reason, should another one be needed, to steer clear of the pink 'un clowns. Legend for me, all the way!
Gunny, beacause of what the club and the supporters mean to him, may well have taken the job, because he may well have thought he would have been letting us down in some way if he didn't. Unfortunately it didn't work out, and he shouldn't have been asked in the first place. I think the board put him in an impossible position, but they guy is still a legend in my eyes. Cheers for the years of service Gunny
I have never considered him to be a legend but certainly a truly superb keeper. He was a 'safe' choice for the board. Even on relegation the supporters were never going to turn against him (in numbers). The board were wrong to ask him to do the job and Gunny was wrong to accept it, but I do not blame him for doing so. He never went down in my estimations but was relieved when he got the sack.
Agree with Thai Canary. He was a safe choice - typical of the limp-wristed stance portrayed time and time again by McNallys predecessor Neil Doncaster. I firmly believe DM would never have sanctioned Gunnys appointment to anything other than a caretaker role and after relegation, the search would have begun immediately for a 'proper' manager to get us out of the mess Doomcaster had helped get us into. McNally is the best thing to happen to this club in over a decade, as he has given the board some belief, conviction and direction - all three of which were missing prior to his appointment. To use a motor racing analogy, the last three seasons (relegation, followed by two promotions) have been practice / warm up laps. Come august, we'll be on the grid ready for the main event to start
Well, he wasn’t one of the great goalkeepers; in fact he wasn’t the best to play for the club. His time as manager took us to our lowest point in half a century, and he led us to a 1-7 thrashing by Colchester... at home! So, there it is. Nothing else to say. Except there is. Three hundred and ninety appearances for City, twice player of the season, ‘Keeper through the most successful period in the Clubs history, and those of us old enough to remember will never ever forget him running out as City’s number 1 so soon after losing Francesca. I don’t mind admitting, and I know I’m not alone in this, that it still brings a lump to my throat to think about it. I didn’t see Keelan play, but by all accounts he was better than Gunn. Woods, at his best, was better than Gunn. In my opinion (I know some will disagree) Gunn was better than Green. Post retirement, he became a great ambassador for the club. It also needs to be said that, while his period as manager was very painful, the mess wasn’t really of his making, and he actually came pretty close to keeping us up. He shouldn’t have been appointed, but that’s primarily the fault of the club, not Gunny. So, does a very hard period of under a year, destroy over two decades of service from Gunny to our club? Never in a million years. The fact it’s even called into question annoys me greatly. Bryan Gunn is a City legend, and always will be.
the problem was that he truly loved our club and was prepared to do anything to help us. unfortunately with no previous managerial experience he was proved wanting through no fault of his own. will always remain a legend in my eyes.
As player and the work he done for charity I like him. As a manager and working for the club, I think his a self important ******. Still can't keep out the limelight isn't he attempting to get his name in the media by supporting some kid on Britain's Got Talent? How embarrassing. Who is the absolute melter who made him sheriff of Norwich?
As far as I know, the kid from Britains got talent, and his family, are family friends of the Gunn's. Not really surprising that they'd support him. His role as manager ultimately speaks for itself, but I can't see how his various other roles at the club make him self important. Wouldn't that make Gossy, Hucks and Neil Adams all self important, too?
I find it embarrassing. He spoke to the EDP about it too he seems to crave the attention, also displays his obvious ****e taste in music but thats another thing. Not at all but others seem to do things quietly in the background and with a lot more dignity.
Northampton' whilst I disagree with your opinion, I defend to the death your right to hold it! I think you will find yourself in the minority on here!
If he's going to try to drum up support for the B.G.T. lad, he's got to do that through the media. Seems a bit unfair to hold it against him. I won't try to defend his taste in music though
Cheers Dave. I hope as a club we can put this Bryan Gunn saga to bed, his been gone for a long time just another person to put into the same group as Roeder, Grant and Hamilton. In my opinion there are other players worthy of the legend status and who I'd prefer to be associated with this club.
Regardless of his questionable musical taste, he spent two decades at this club, in several different capacities even after his playing career ended. It was all going swimmingly well until he was wrongly appointed as successor to Peter Grant and then Glenn Roeder. Strange thing is, if we as a club were still in turmoil now, then people start asking where it all went wrong etc. But christ, those days are gone, long behind us, so maybe it's time for everyone - including a minority of ******ed Pink'un readers - to move on
