Drawing heavily on Sidâs favourite player etc thread, I think that one stating who everyoneâs âguilty pleasureâ may be more personal and revealing. We can all pick Stan, Gerry, Les, Ray, Trevor, Adel, etc.... because we all think pretty much the same, but who is the player you liked when few others seemed to, and why? Mine would be Gary Penrice. I think a genuine QPR no 10. I clearly remember one goal he scored where the ball arrived to him on the full at the edge of the box. He controlled it in the air with his left foot, and before it hit the ground, buried it in the far corner of the goal with his right. A quality goal from a quality player (in my opinion).
Darren Peacock. A no nonsense center half who always seemed to give everything, with a slightly effeminate hairdo !!
I've actually met Darren Peacock before in Portugal. Very nice bloke. Thats the reason I'm going back to Portugal this year
Mick Kelly, keeper between the Springett and Parkes ages. I used to stand then at the Loft end behind the right hand goal post. Always serious Mick and mostly pretty good shot stopper. Could kick that well though... no normal hoof outs. Had to let the ball hit the ground and half volley it upfield.
How about when we were broke and had to sell Kevin Gallen to Huddersfield. They were playing us at Loftus Road and got a penalty. Gallen took a long run up and sent the penalty wide - and the whole ground started singing that song. You know, the one about his magic hat.... Seem to remember Huddersfield sold him back to us a couple of months later
Great idea Roller. I have one that fits the bill perfectly: George Santos. I thought he did really well for us. Was asked to play in every position bar Goalkeeper. I even had Santos printed on the back of my shirt. No nonsense big thick bruiser. Sure, he made a few howlers but he was an integral part of Ollie's team and the manner in which they played. Took the stick from the crowd well too!
A really vivid random QPR memory of mine was a game at home to villa some time in the early 90s. We were 1 up with minutes remaining and under heavy pressure, when we broke from deep in our own half and penny was 1 on 1 with the keeper but still some way out. The keeper came well out of his area to try and tackle him, but penrice came out on top and cruised toward an empty net. The relief was enormous, everyone celebrating before the goal was scored. Great memory, anyone recall that one? Guilty pleasure, probably jan stejskal, no major guilt, but he'll do. He made an awesome save in front of the kop when we beat the scousers 3-1 up there. Goalkeepers union. Gino padula as well, I loved that little fella
Padula was a shining light in the very dark days and Furlong copped a load of abuse in his early days but won us over...
Let's try to form a team of these. Kelly is before my time, but as he is Brixton's offering I'll accept him without question. Gino, Gino, Gino was surely too popular to be included? Santos and Brevett are perfect - I didn't like either! Peacock is marginal, and Furlong hard to call, as you said Sooperhoop he did cop a load of abuse early on, but became a hero. Maybe they can be on the bench. We need more.....
I suppose Devon White could be the one, awful unco-ordinated player, but he got some goals and was almost viewed affectionately in the end...
i vote for devon white...always remember the pre season with brentford when along the touchline on crutches he comes...almost fell on his face when his name was chanted and he lifted his crutches...priceless
How about Trevor Francis? Everyone seems to forget about him, but he did some amazing things the two or three seasons he played for us? Loved watching Wegerle and Wilkins later on with Sir Les.
