Someone on B and A reckoned we had a total of 14 different players on loan at some point last season. Of these I would say that only Eaves, Mambo and Mcginn (in that order) noticeably improved the team. Would anyone like to guess how many loan players in total we will have this season? I reckon after our underwhelming start it will be 20. Perhaps the winner of this competition could make an appearance on the Town bench near the end of the season as it looks as if we will not be able to fill it regularly.

How many do we have now? I lose track of GT's and RW's dealings....I really can't get enthused by loan players unless there's a chance of purchase

    Metashrew,
I make it 3 now - Tavernier, Burke and Assante but I expect there to be at least one more before Saturday. I agree absolutely - it is really difficult for us as supporters to get enthusiastic about players who come in for as little as a month - they are generally not match fit and more susceptible to injury or not good enough in the first place.

Supporters took pretty well to Tom Eaves - he got a song at the Bolton game!

Yes, Lennny - Eaves was the exception that proves the rule. The problem is, if like Eaves the loan player is good, he is either whisked back to his parent club or goes on loan to a club in a higher league. Despite the fact he did very well for us I see he turned us down for another loan last week.

I just get fed up of watching other teams trying out their hopefuls at our expense!!....then 88% of the time they're not worth a light, and if they are they are hauled back to their parent club leaving GT to scratch around for a replacement...not the best way to run a half decent club....

Last season of emergency loans, probably time to wean yourselves off short-term fixes.

If I remember rightly there have been changes in the value attributed to lower league junior players making it costly to 'bring them on' as a premier league club won't pay as much for them. Harvesting them basically. In turn Prem and Champ clubs also hoard potential players to stop others getting them. This leads to a lot of wastage chucked over the side each season which us bottom feeders get to fight over. Obviously the ones who come out on loan are needing game time to develop them or return to fitness or trialing for a move on to another club.

How many loans will we have this season? Depends how well they gel with the squad. Helan as an example - I always looked the like of and yet he was sent packing and is now at Sheffield. Hectar must have caused some sort of issues within the squad and that seems to have had follow on issues, I think it was the Hereford cup game where all that started. He also always seemed to have one calamity per game but otherwise he was quite a good player... :D

    Great thread!

Seems we all liked Eaves, pity he didn't come back. Had a feeling that he might have been good for young Tom.

I have long thought the same way as you Matster about Prem and Champ teams with one slight variation.....they buy very good players to keep them away from others BUT with younger talent they treat it as a lottery....have quite a few of them and see which ones blossom; the more tickets you buy the better chance of winning. For the very big clubs it's not such a problem because their accademies were doing a job for the whole 'community', for slightly lesser clubs in top two tiers they did act as a sponge for talent they may not ever use. Strangely some of their 'rejects' never make it even at lower levels. It's another reason we should try and develop our own talent even if we have a low return, maybe we would get a better (enhanced?) reputation. Thanks for the info on Eaves; where was that, Star or a website?

Interesting that GT had been tracking Burke for some time. I think he evisaged a partnership with Eaves which would have been quite promising.

I go for 8, all caused by lovable, parsimonious, skinflint roland Wycherley! he is lovable and he is keeping the club afloat on his own. we need 5 other shropshire buinesss people to make us a going concern and a success on the pitch. why does GT stay, he must love the job.

Make of that what you will. Everyone assumes it is Eaves but might well be A.Nother who has played for us on loan, as a player or against us at some point.

Oh and Metashrew, I meant the same as you in that the top clubs collect up as many decent looking players hoping that some seeds flower.

    .....don't you love the phrase......"not every egg's a chicken".

Thanks Matster, good banter ahead of my first visit to Salop this season....haven't we been given a difficult start? Perhaps we mustn't get despondant and hope the players don't too.
