There is a very interesting article in the Guardian - a potted history of the 2 main Hampshire teams. Very well worth a read: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2011/dec/16/joy-of-six-portsmouth-southampton-derbies
Cheers for pointing me towards this 3rd eye. It's great to find so few Daily Hate readers and many more broadsheet followers on these pages .
Hi OddRiverOaks - glad you enjoyed it. Do you think it's worth putting on the Saints board as well? I would do it, but haven't worked out how yet. Finally decided to find out how to do it - so is done!
Great article! Brings back some great memories 1976 game with my lovely long gone Dad at Fallingdown Park 1984 - squeezed into the away end and being abused and spat at after the game as all away fans were herded like animals by the Skate police to the railway station but great result! Even then the treatment of Rubrn was shocking
Good read 3rd eye. Shame there is not much on the 1.Of the two it is a fact that we are the most successful club 2. We have spanked them 4-1 at home, and 4-1 in their own back yard at St.Fairy's in our last two meetings! Seemed a bit biased towards the Scummers in my view
Yes I noticed that it stopped at 1984 Right - am now leaving for Pompey. Will meet up with exleighparker in the morning, hopefully without a big hangover, either of us, and will no doubt enjoy the game tomorrow!
Funny, but I thought it was slightly biased in favour of Pompey, but there you go. If that's the case, then maybe they got it right down the middle. They did miss out on Saints complete superiority in the Southern League, during the early years of 20th century, so I don't think you can complain too much. Stopping at 1984 was obviously because the writer expected present day fans to know well enough what happened from then on. Besides, it's well documented in various other articles. 4-1 wins for Pompey were preceded by 2-0 and 3-0s for Saints. We all know the score really. Good read.
