I put him up there with Rodwell in being the biggest c#nts our club has ever signed. Weve had a few players take the pish over the years, but having somebody like Grigg who isnt even a very good footballer takes things to a whole new level...

HOW NOT TO BE A FOOTBALLER by JACK DODDS Rounding off a fantastic deadline day, Will Grigg is set to see out the final year of his contract at Sunderland on loan to Rotherham United. Fewer players have had such a gladly received departure, but that comes as no surprise! After joining on deadline day back in January 2019, for a fee rising to a record-breaking £4million, the Northern Ireland international was deemed fit to fill the big boots of Joshua Maja, but things didn't work out straight away... Despite opening his account in his fourth appearance for the lads, via a penalty at home to Gillingham in a 4-2 victory. Grigg missed two major chances in his first home game, a 1-1 draw against Blackpool, most notably an open goal which would have drawn us level. A common defence of League One's most expensive player ever has been the lad's lack of confidence. Whilst it's true that a debut goal can work wonders for a striker’s confidence, our number 22 was always destined to fail at the Stadium of Light. Whilst players lacking a little bit of quality can be commonly forgiven among our fanbase, a bad attitude cannot. Deciding not to relocate to Wearside despite signing a long-term deal, rarely showing any appreciation to the fans, negative body language and a genuine lack of effort, we weren't presented with any real reason to get behind the lad. Whilst it has been stated numerous times that Griggy did not want to come to Sunderland in the first place, his sheer lack of effort and bad attitude can't be excused. Playing for the biggest club in the Third Division and in front of 30,000 fans each home game, fewer opportunities as large will come to any player at this level. But, instead of rising to the challenge, and relishing the chance to play for a club as large as we are, the ex-Wigan forward decided he was above the idea of getting his hands dirty and passed the buck to the fact he felt unhappy at the club. Not all players hit the ground running at a new club, or are even the right fit for it, but Grigg adds himself to an ever-growing list of players to have come to our club and not only failed to perform but failed to wear the shirt with any real pride, and leaves Wearside with no real appreciation. With Ross Stewart firing on all cylinders, the likes of Broadhead and Dajaku in the ranks of the first team, and Aiden O'Brien desperately battling for first team minutes, we'll have soon forgotten about what turned out to be one of our worst ever signings.

What a cluster **** of a signing that turned out to be by Donald. The whole signing and the way it played out on STID was a shambles from the start.

He's still a fair distance behind, Rodwell. That guy was an utter joke, at least, Grigg, usually made himself available for selection even if he was just, fat, **** and, uninterested on the pitch.

I had a horrible feeling from the moment I heard we were in for him that it was going to be a bad signing. It was all downhill from that point for SD.

basically, he had no excuse to not do the very least and play himself into a position where another club might have shown an interest, his complete lack of anything resembling a professional footballer has more or less told me he is sick of it all and just wants to retire or try to get one more fat pay day...even in a meaningless friendly the lads were all smiles and congrats when he scored so it certainly does not look as if he was 'frozen out' by any of the staff, we all wanted him to do well as that would have given us our best chance of promotion.

i doubt we will hear anything of him once this season is done unless some other idiot owner decides to take a punt on him.

It won't be long until he's blaming the club, the manager and the supporters ...

... the only hat trick he'll ever get.

Scum both of them but In the damage caused, Grigg shades even Rodwell imo.

Probably not but the damage Rodwell caused was relatively sustainable in the position we were then in, not so in Griggs case, he well and truly shafted us.

Great description, of Graham, Wyke and Grigg who at this time last season were all in the first team squad.

I don't like our tendency to turn players that haven't done well here in to pantomime villains. Grigg didn't want to be here, he'd rather have been closer to home. You can't force a player to love a club. We should never have signed him in the first place. He's gone now let's forget him.

We're even over the top about players like Chopra. All that stuff about that miss being deliberate is bollocks. He made that up later to keep in with the Mags.

Rodwell is the only one that deserves our ire, due to the fact that he was happy to give up on being a footballer, anywhere. Grigg just wanted to be somewhere else.

So why did he come then, he could have made his living else where, and spared us his presence, I honestly dont care whether he loves the club or not, but I do care that he came here with no intention of honouring his deal, he is nothing but wage cheat, imo. You might defend him and his ilk, but dont expect everyone to sing from your hymbook, that would be foolish, as well as self deluding.

Isn't the rumour that Wigan needed to sell him? Their finances were in a pretty dire state back then.
Anyway, I'm not defending him. I'm saying he was a signing that didn't work. Happens all the time, I just don't see the need to turn him into some kind of pantomime villain. Especially because we've moved on as a club. I doubt we'll be signing players of his ilk again during KLD's ownership.

"I have been training to a really high standard at Sunderland, even though I have not got the minutes recently. I am still that same player and goalscorer."

I can’t stand the bloke but I bet he goes and scores 10-12 goals at Rotherham this season. He can clearly do it, he just didn’t wanna be at SAFC.
