Forty two years ago 20th January was a Sunday and Fulham (along with Millwall) made a wee bit of history playing in the first ever League match on a Sunday. 1974 was an austere time; power cuts, fuel shortages and in a bid to save energy by not using floodlights, clubs opted for Sunday fixtures. This second division clash, one of three that day, kicking off at 11.30 was the first however. A wee legal problem in that entrance had to be free was got round by making fans buy a programme and using this as their way through the turnstiles. Bryan Clarke of Millwall scored the only goal of the game in front of a healthy crowd. please log in to view this image It wasn’t just the economy that was a bit austere that year. Alex Stock was still re-building the Fulham side and making sure we didn’t concede goals. Unfortunately we didn’t score too many that year either, and 1-0 was about par for the course. But it sort of worked in the end with us finishing the season in a credible 13th place.
