What has happened within football now We , have bury and maybe Bolton , going bust , this can not happen in my eyes These clubs have been around for years and built the game , it looks as if the fa are doing zero It’s time.to funnel Out the money , generated better surely Where ,is all this money going. Thoughts
Money has always played a part in football but the problem is becoming exasperated by the extremes now being experienced. Some players are now earning more per week than Clubs just a Division below which can’t be right. As usual there is a short sighted element to any planning being more concerned about today and failing to recognise we need to think about tomorrow as well. But again that applies to Society as well. How do you solve it? I don’t know but unless sufficient people with power and position accept something needs to be done then I do genuinely worry for the long term future of the beautiful game.
Unfortunately the TV money available to PL clubs has distorted the whole picture. Clubs in the lower leagues are being taken over by owners who see the riches available and want to get their clubs to the higher levels and are not running their clubs in a financially sustainable way. Clubs have to be financially viable based on gate income and commercial sales and they have to cut their cloth accordingly. The EFL needs to start some serious linking of financial performance to promotion. Clubs running at losses should not be allowed to be promoted. Owners should not be allowed to loan clubs money - its a gift or nothing. Then you can look at how the PL money can be more fairly distributed. I dont think the Broadcastinh money is going to fall anytime soon. The demand for PL football worldwide is growing although the medium by which its delivered now may change. I pay around £60 quid a year to have access to ALL the PL games online but with a potential audience here of ~50million thats £3billion. Problem is that broadcasting revenue is distorting how PL clubs view their revenue stream. They may care less about attendance revenue and commercial income (like we seem to be doing) and if worldwide interest starts to decline they will then be hit hard.
It's one great gravy train. Why would the premier clubs, the CEOs, the agents, the TV companies, the advertisers and sponsors, the players, the bigwigs at UEFA, FIFA, PL and FA want to change anything that negates their cushy lives of power and huge riches? They want more not less.
Leeds United have proved that a club can recover from financial ruin, but there is much more to this than meets the eye. Money is the only thing that can guarantee success so you can't blame owners for gambling. No danger of that from Fat Ashley.
Its ****. Football is a pale shadow of its former self in terms of watchability. VAR is the final nail for me. Greed, a softening of the participants, a lack of sporting principles in the game, the ill thought out introduction of technologies. Not all of it is down to money but some of it is. I've watched some great games over the years but when I look back to the 90's and compare it to now, it wipes the floor with modern football in terms of watchability. I also think its borne out in the footballers we produce too. I can't remember the last Gascoigne, Le Tissier, Beardsley, Waddle, Beckham type footballer with elegance and class. I love all sport but I never thought I'd see the day when if I had to pick between watching Newcastle or watching an Ashes Test Match, I'd be close to picking the latter. That has been the case for quite a few years now. Boxing would be a tough choice too. Unprompted watching England Rugby at the weekend, the missus just said "not sure I can watch this, they are running over each others heads and everything...how come the footballers can't even take a little tap on the ankle". A common comment many of us will have made or heard made. Its selfish greed and different forms of it that have got us where we are now - but its also the natural process of change. Unfortunately for the likes of myself, this is not going to change. The younguns like the bling, they buy into the rolling around, they want VAR and embrace the disjointed nature of the game (gives them a chance to check their instagram), and they could not give a flying **** about sporting principles or football influencing society in a positive way. They see the footballers getting obscene cash as "getting theirs". Everything changes and some people will feel its not for the better. However the impression I get is the youth feel it is better and they are more connected to it than our desired version.
