As its close season and im bored already, ive been thinking a lot recently about finding out which players the fans of our wonderful club condsider to be our greatest players. Im going to conduct a bit of a survey and come up with a top 3 and a top team based on results. I am also doing this on other message board sites. Here are some suggestions for those of you who are either too young that you still get a concession into AP or those so old you now get to sit at the front of the stand 1. Mark West (striker) - 1984-1992. 381 apps 171 goals. Scored crucial goals in crucial games, notably THAT goal against Kidderminster at Wembley. 2. Dave Carroll (midfielder) - 1988-2002. 602 apps 100 goals. Nicknamed Jesus by the fans. A stalwart in midfield capable of acts of magic including Wembley 1994 play-off final. 3. Keith 'Rhino' Ryan (everywhere!) - 1987-2004? 517 apps 50 goals. Scorer of the goal that sent us wild in the FA Cup semi final in 2001. Played in just about every position for us in his career and even spent time as our caretaker boss. Also player in every Wembley appearance. 4. Steve 'Brownie' Brown (defensive mid) - 1993-2003. 443 apps 43 goals. Our very own Paul Ince. He governed midfield and on many occasions set the tone for the game with a thumping tackle on opposing players early on in games. Player of the season twice. 5. Keith 'Scotty' Scott (striker) - 1990-1994 & 1996-1999. 139 apps 84 goals. Awesome goalscoring ratio, formed a lethal partnership with West to get us promoted to the League. Our record transfer sale when he left for PL bound Swindon. Only downside is he played for the filth as well 6. Steve Guppy (winger) - 1989-1995 & 2004 - 269 apps 26 goals. Our first England international. This geezer was an absolute flyer of a winger. On his day could tear another team apart on his own at any level. These are my top 6 but I can think of countless others who made brilliant contributions over the last 25 years........ Simon Garner, Glyn Creaser, Andy Kerr, Jason Cousins, Martin Taylor, Paul Hyde, Matt Crossley, John Granville, Michael Simpson, Gareth Ainsworth to name but a few. Lets get an unofficial 'Greatest Blues Player' and I might even try to contact the winner with a homemade certificate.
Hard to choose one, Either Jesus or Rhino. Also you forgot Carlos López de Silanes, who can forget his performance away to Cambridge Utd on a Tuesday night about 8-9 years ago?? I'll plump for Rhino.
Depends how you mean greatest? My favourite would be brownie or cousins for the passion they played with and there connection to the fans. Greatest in terms of achievements you have to look at guppy or Roger Johnson
Good idea devonblue. Very difficult though. 2,3 and 4 is my short list. But I might have put Creaser in my short list as well. I think I would have to be put in front of a firing squad to choose one, either Rhino or SB I think.
I rather think that a certain Nikki Bull may end up on this list eventually. Carroll, Guppy, Scott, Cousins, Ryan, Brown, Kerr, Tyson, Evans.....................
My never say die and will to win top five 1) Jason Cousins 2) Gareth Ainsworth 3) Terry Evans 4) Steve Brown 5) Keith Ryan Top five contender one to watch.. Dave Winfield
Dave Carroll wins hands down for me, I have many a time tried to recreate THAT goal against Preston!!!, 2nd Rhino for his dedication and 3rd Brownie for being our midfiled hard-man and as DB said loved a thumping tackle!
In terms of shear of ability, the greatest for me was Simon Garner. Such quality, great touch and general ability. Greatest for longevity and overall impact on the club probably Dave Carroll. He was actually named Jesus by Steve Guppy not the fans. He was having a physio session which Gups walked in on and as Carroll was laid out on the floor in a crucifix position, Gups started calling him Jesus! The crowd heard about this and it went from there! The other question, which is always a good one is your all time team! Mine: GK - Martin Taylor RB - Matt Lawrence CB - Keith Barrett (Purely for his moustache and was my favourite player as a 2 year old!) CB - Mike Williamson LB - Mickey Bell RW - Dave Carroll CM- Steve Thompson CM - Keith Ryan or Steve Brown LW - Steve Guppy CF - Simon Garner CF - Nathan Tyson
Martin Taylor would probably be my choice, although I didn't really see much of the likes of Guppy, Garner, and West. That FA Cup side of 00/01 will take some beating, but hopefully there are a few future legends in the side again now - Ainsworth and Bull if they play long enough for us. and Bloomfield will hopefully be known as a great club servant perhaps along with Betsy. It's great to see the fans having an affinity with the players again. The club is starting to get that 'feel' to it back again, on the playing side at least.
this is a tough one,i could choose about25 players but having played at centre half myself i would go with matt crossly or terry evans, not many forwards got any change out of them 2.my favourite striker has to be garner ,he could have a *** while warming up and still come on and do the bizz.tough call in midfield between brownie and rhino.goalkeeper has to be the legendary martin taylor.but how could you pick an all time great team without the likes of creaser thompson cousins guppy devine bell carrol mcgavin etc .i am just glad i have been privaleged to see all of these blues legends play for us.
I started watching Wycombe in the 02/03 season, so have missed out on pretty much all the players mentioned above, Brownie and Rhino were also coming to the end of their careers so didn't see them at their best, here's my favourite 11 since then, probably completely different to anyone else. GK Nikki Bull RB Danny Senda CB Roger Johnson CB Mike Williamson LB Russel Martin - a bit of a problem positon no one really sticks out, so Russ has to swap sides RM Gareth Ainsworth/Darren Currie CM Tommy Doherty - ignoring how he left the club CM Jermaine McSporran - Further up the pitch behind strikers LM Matty Phillips/Kevin Betsy ST Nathan Tyson ST Scott McGleish/Sean Devine/Tommy Mooney - I really liked all 3!
Dave Carroll, Mickey Bell, Brownie, Westie, Rhino, Guppy, Tyson, Ainsworth, Johnson, Garner, De Souza (for 1 season) McGleish, Taylor, Bull, McGavin (Sorry, but I thought he was class), My favourite - Ainsworth - Just a top bloke. The best, probably Carroll.
