just a little bit of harmless whimsy to pass the time , i dare say we all have one lap lodged in our memories of whatever driver that will allways strike a cord with us - would be interested to know from fellow members which lap they think is the best they have ever seen , obviously it would include passing maneuvers , the execution and skill involved in the execution of those passing maneuvers , of course if you can post a clip of the lap so much the better, it would also involve the competitivness of the machine that was driven , the conditions at the time , and the competitiveness of the machinery of his rivals , now i trust we can be objective and unbiassed and not just put a lap from our favourite driver for no other reason than he is our favourite driver ( and as childish as it may sound we all know we do have a driver we favour ) and of course it must be a driver who"s career we have watched from day 1 and not just something we have read in whatever publication - before i created this topic i thought long and hard about my choice trying to be as objective as i possibly could - for me one lap stands out above all others and i honestly just cant think of anything else i have seen to rival it -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MAvSZPHSZ4
Surely a great lap is a great lap, there's no need to have seen the drivers career from start to finish is there? Seems a odd rule. I'll have a think and see who I come up with, I may have to suggest two suggestions, one from your criteria and one from all of time
Predictable from me, predictable lap from Schumacher.
When I saw the thread title I thought you were referring to qualifying laps. As for opening laps, this is the best one I've ever seen: I may be a bit biased, but I feel Alonso's lap was better than Senna's in 93.
i didnt mean for anybody to take it exactly as i wrote it bright , i was hoping people would not just quote from a book without actually seeing part or all of the drivers career --
for whatever reason eternal my computer is only showing a blank picture , can you also try and post a you tube clip - ---- thanks
John Watson 1982 USA East GP at Detroit. Unbiased, had only Ford DFV power and on a circuit where no other bugger seemed capable of overtaking anyone.
brilliant lap by alonso , maybe the gloss is taken off it slightly because of the competitiveness of his renault and the mediochre cars he passed because of his poor qual position -- still a brilliant lap by the spaniard --
wonderful lap by michael -- i was thinking more of something outstanding that a driver did under race conditions , but never the less micheal was inch perfect --
So far I'm the only one not to have picked his favourite driver Can I get the award for not being biased!?
Was the only one that sprang to mind other than Donington 93. As much as i'd like to post Mansell/Hamilton videos and some of the individual moves they've done, I can't think of anything that they did over a whole lap to rival those videos. If I could I'd post up Silverstone 88 when Mansell in the Williams-Judd was only beaten by Senna in the mighty MP4/4.
good shout saint -- i did seriously think about villeneuve vs arnoux but i thought the conditions at donnington made the execution of the passing maneuvers more difficult --
It is not one specific lap and I have not seen them apart from on Youtube, but any of Fangio's laps in the 1957 German GP where he was gunning down the leader Mike Hawthorn who was over a minute ahead and Fangio was putting in laps that were 6 seconds faster than the lap record. one of mansells forgotten drives , however --------- was it not normally aspirated cars without the turbo lag that finished 2nd 3rd and 4th , (cant be bothered to check ) which makes me think that a normally aspirated car was the thing to have in such conditions , never the less it was a mighty drive from mansell , if he had been able to replicate his silverstone form that he showed most years thruout his career at other tracks he would have gone down as one the best ever , whatever demon he had floating around in his head very often prevented him from doing that --
It doesn't really count as a single lap, but Hakkinen chasing down Schumacher at Spa 2000 ending in that fantastic move around Zonta:
If the question what is the greatest relative lap your have ever seen then I would have to choose this lap by Yuji Ide. He did not go off the track, crash or stall at all the entire lap. Bravo It was a god damn terrible lap however.
