In your opinion, you can state a reason why if you like. I've only included managers of recent times, who have won a trophy, promotion, or achieved something significant.
Has to be Alec Stock, a manager who was successful before he came to us, lead Yeovil to the 5th round of the FA Cup and was a builder of teams. His feat of building our 'double-winning' side of 66-67 will never be repeated and his legacy is the club we have today, we simply would still be scratching about with Brentford and Orient if it hadn't been for him and Jim Gregory.
agree alec stock he started the revolution off at rangers in the 60's with some astute signings, also like to praise jago who was good but had a fall out with big jim & he brought in some great players & then left it to sexton, well enough said of the greatest side ever to pull on the hoops shirt.
Sexton for me too,took us to within a whisker of winning the Division 1 title playing some scintalating football.
We played some cracking football under De Canio, best manager of 'Flav' era even if we defended like we had no defence. I've plumped for El Tel purely for the glamour, wheeler dealing and the perma tan. Can we have a 'worst' manager poll? Theres about 576 candidates....
For me because getting us to the Cup Final and replay there with Spurs, plus the promotion, it's gotta be El Tel. Dave Sexton had the best team, but I don't think he built it. Stock was before my time.
I'm going to have to go for Gordon Jago for two reasons. 1) He built the team that Sexton almost won the league with 2) No one else has and I can't stand to see him with no votes.
John Fishfinger April 3rd - May 12th 1907 Solely responsible for the invented gusset formation ... Sadly missed... when the formation backfired on him he had no chance and was tipped for bigger things ... Alas we will never know. His incredible playing career which lasted 3 months was also blighted by injury when both his hands developed neon tetra ... And some people moan if they have a cold... What would he made of Dyer we can only guess RIP
I've gone for Sexton, simply because the football we played under him was breathtaking. If there was the TV coverage that exists today, the pundits would have been drooling! Hard decision though, it was basically Jago's team. Who knows what we could have achieved under El Tel had he not gone to Barca, & it was Stock that got the modern era off & running. But, purely for the style of play, & almost winning the title, I'll stick with Sexton.
Alec Stock started it all in the 60's his teams always played great football, he laid the corner stone for all the success that the R's have had.
It's worth noting that a lot of the coaching when Gordon Jago was manager was done by Venables, Sexton had a simple job of fine-tuning what was already a formidable side. The 60s and 70s really was the golden era started by Stock.
Terry Venables for me. Can't believe how many teams fell for the Bob Hazel near post flick on, but they did!! Also remember winning two nil at Stamford bridge in a night match (Clive Allen?) with about 400 rangers fans and 30,000 scum shouting how they were going to kill us all, ha ha ha.
Gareth Ainsworth - he's achieved the feat of managing the club 50 separate times in a couple of years while being a great servant to the club and a nice guy. OK, Ferry Francis is the best in my lifetime (that only goes back to late 80s early 90s). Great team and a manager that had them overachieving (a certain Mr Ferdinand helped by being completely awesome). Never seen us win owt so can't speculate on Stocks, Venables, Sextons Smiths etc.
