1. Grant knows what it takes to get out of this division, having scored seven goals in 40 games in Sunderland's successful 2006/07 Championship title-winning campaign.

2. He came off the bench twice in five days to score winners in 2-1 victories against QPR and Southampton - without the four points those goals earned, Sunderland would have only made the play-offs.

3. Jason Steele brilliantly saved Grant's penalty at Portman Road last season. Lukas Jutkiewicz put Boro ahead moments later, but Grant had the last laugh with a 25-yard stunner to earn his side a 1-1 draw. Ironically, he'd also scored twice in the 3-3 draw between the teams in Suffolk the previous season.

4. Grant scored one of the quickest ever goals at the Riverside, the opener for Sunderland after just 76 seconds in a 2-2 draw on September 22 2007 (pictured above).

5. Former boss Roy Keane often compared Grant to his legendary Manchester United team-mate, Paul Scholes. "His awareness, his touch, his tackling are good," he said during his time as Black Cats' boss. "He's got a goal in his locker and any decent midfielder needs that - right or left foot. When it comes to his attitude, I can't fault the lad. He's not been an ounce of trouble. We could do with a few more Grant Leadbitters at the club."

6. At Sunderland he wore the number 18 shirt in tribute to Scholes.

7. Grant interrupted his wedding preparations to come to sign for Boro. Having completed the formalities, he flew back to Portugal to tie the knot.

8. Grant celebrated in emotional style after coming off the bench to score a 25-yarder against Arsenal in October 2008. He ran over to his manager and had his head on the floor, nearly in tears. He revealed later that his father, Brian Leadbitter, had died just weeks beforehand and his ashes had been buried right on that spot under the grass on Stadium of Light.

9. He made his Ipswich debut in a 3-1 defeat to Boro at the Riverside on September 12 2009.

10. Sunderland legend Kevin Ball, now the club's Academy manager, once described Grant as the "perfect role model" for Sunderland's emerging generation of young players.
