The below tweet was posted up by Soccer Sauce... one of the verified Twitter ITK's.

We understand Newcastle have made initial contact with the representatives of Swiss MF Granit Xhaka. #NUFC

He looks a bit like Haris I reckon?

    nufcblog.com make the following comments:

Granit started his career at Basel back in 2002 and has played for all the Swiss Youth sides and he joined Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012 for around £6M and has since played 120 times with 9 goals.

He is reminiscent in playing style of a top German central midfielder currently at Manchester United and former Swiss national manager Ottmar Hitzfeld once called him the young Schweinsteiger.

Granit is of Kosovo Albanian parents who moved to Switzerland shortly before Granit was born and he has a younger brother Taulant Xhaka who also plays football and is still at Basel.

Interestingly Taulant has 10 full caps for Albania after playing for all the Swiss youth sides through U21 – much like his older brother did but Granit went on to play for the full Swiss side.

The 6’1″ midfielder would be a terrific singing for Newcastle, but of course there’s no saying if this report has any truth to it.

But it will take players of Xhaka’s class to ensure Newcastle remain a Premier League club at the end of this season.

    Looks good on paper.

If we do go and get him I hope he looks good on grass. The monocotyledonous, usually herbaceousplants with narrow leaves growing from the base type.

****s sake. Looks like Ashley will roll the dice again judging by all the players we've been linked to. Can we not just get some players in who definitely do the job, instead of no name players who have done very little in piss weak leagues around Europe? The time for ****ing about has passed. We will be relegated for crying out loud.

He has played 120 games in the Bundesliga. How is that a poss weak league? Where exactly are we going to sign players from? In our current state it's going to be very difficult to attract an established premier league midfielder.

I watched you lot pre season against BM, he controlled the game.

Class player I think he'd do well for you.

Its that time of the year again, isn't it!!! Good old rumour mill / season ticket renewal time. No doubt we will make some derisory offers and kick a few tyres and talk about 'value' and 'the line', but until I see us actually signing some players with proven pedigree, rather than possible potential, ill not be getting excited.

Absolutely bossed a game against Bayern a few weeks back. To the point where Bayern are now linked with buying him in the summer... Although Bayern are saying they have enough players in that position.

Think they are in the mix for CL place as well, no offence but would be a strange career choice to be possibly playing CL football next year to possibly playing Championship football.

Maybe be could confuse him and explain championship is just what we call the champions league in England... Not the smartest cookies are they footballers.

He played CL football with BM this year and they finished last in their group, his wages would probably be doubled playing in the PL at least, even at notoriously tight teams such as Newcastle.

It'd be no more surprising than Shaqiri playing for Stoke. Money talks louder than CL football, ask the Celtic fans.

Shaqiri wasn't getting any game time at Inter so not quite the same (plus inter are a midtable team in Italy now).

This is guy is there star player by all accounts. True he'll prob get a hefty pay rise but I think players actually value CL football slightly higher than more money (to a certain extent). If you guys were solid mid table like Stoke then could see more of the logic but given you have a chance of going down not sure many players would risk leaving a team fighting for CL in Germany for a team fighting relegation in England.

Also so don't get the Celtic point, they can't offer any money or CL football, they always get knocked out before they get there? Moving to Celtic just guarantees you a title and. Cup each year.

    I'm a United fan mate.

I'm not suggesting that Newcastle are a better club for him, but that it could be an attractive proposition for him.

Moving from Inter to Stoke is, no matter how you look at it, a significant backwards step, regardless of Inter's current plight, they'll recover as they have done historically, whereas Stoke are a team unlikely to challenge for any honours, any time soon.

If Shaqiri was willing to play for £10k a week a plethora of CL teams would have been ahead of Stoke, for his signature.

Liverpool have attracted players numerous times who have left champions league regulars, to play for you. Money is far more important to players, unless they can get a place at a CL team who actually have a chance of winning it.
