He has gained a lot of experience under martinez and knows the passing style.. I'd be happy giving him a shot - i'd be happy to see monkey as his number 2 also... still we'll see - however according to Casual Fan if the bookies are so sure it must be a dead cert!
Oh.......................................................BUGGER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is Huw thinking of? I can see players flocking to join us with this appointment. NOT!! Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. We look to pay peanuts and we will get the likes of Graeme Jones. Nothing against the guy, other than he was happy to jump ship with Martinez, because I'm sure he is very good at his job, which is Martinez' assistant at Wigan, NOT THE MANAGER OF SWANSEA CITY!! Huw has done us proud so far but I honestly believe that he has got this one wrong. At this most critical period in our history, it seems that he is going to entrust the future of our club to a man who has absolutely no management experience of his own, in the toughest league in the world. It beggars belief! If we were in the Championship, fair enough. But at this level I can see us being eaten up and gleefully spat out by a succession of teams looking for easy points to ensure their own survival. I think that this might be the riskiest gamble of Huw's tenure. It will either prove to be a master stroke, or a misjudgement of cataclysmic proportions that will send us tumbling back into the abyss of lower league football. Think on, Huw. PLEASE!!
can you honestly see huw and a big time manager together, they would clash in the first 5 minutes, huw will bring in who he knows and that will be GJ....im happy with that appointment as nothing major will change, im more concerned in what the players are feeling at the moment, some dont know GJ and may want to leave. its lucky we have monk there to steady the nerves...
As I've said on another GJ thread, Graeme Jones would be a big mistake, for many obvious reasons, his loyalty has already been brought into question, but to bring in a Rookie at this level, is one hell of a gamble, think Dai is right, seems Jenkins is going for the cheap option, banking all the Liverpool money, very disappointing to hear this, hope it doesn't come off, but with the Bookies suspending all bets, and it being reported that Wigan have agreed for us to talk to Jones, it's looking very ominous, oh well Jenkins has never failed yet, hope this isn't his first mistake, never thought we'd go in for a Rookie at this level, maybe managing our team is a walk in the park after all!...................
He May be a rookie at being the number one, but he has had bags of experience as nr 2 and will know full well what the game is all about.... he must have the knowledge just from observations and performing the supporting role by now... One thing for sure, huw and the board certainly know alot more about who we should appoint than me.. I would be happy with his appointment if that's what the board decides..... DPJ understand what you are saying about loyalty, but lets face it they are all the same. So whoever we appoint, if they don't perform then it was a bad appointment and they get binned OR if they do well then sooner or later a big fish comes in and tempts them away then we call them for not being loyal..... So what's the difference if we even took Martinez back (can't believe I said that) if we get a year or 2 out of them with success then we'll surely be on this merry go round again.....
Good call in my book. He played a major role behind Martinez down here. He has now got a few years Prem experience behind him (although not as an out and out manager). We don't want "names" like Steve Bruce/McLeish who will take us backwards. He knows us, our systems and players - Good luck to him (if selected!)
None of our last 3 managers have been "names" at management level. Our Board have proved themselves in this respect. Having said that, Poyet would be interesting, but I assume he is contracted to Brighton and is himself in the middle of a "project". Why leave when he hasn't finished the job? Laudrup as a manager? Not sure, I dont know enough about him. What experience have the two of them got in relation to the style of football we want to play?
Swansman agreed, but what players will GJ attract? what club contacts does he have other than Wigan? Is it the right decision to appoint a Rookie at this level? Look at Wolves with Terry Connor, and that reminds me, even Wolves now a Championship side, have seen the good sense to appoint an experienced manager in Stale Solbakken from Cologne. I really think Jenkins has retreated on this one, and it's one hell of a gamble at this level! Anyway hope it's not Jones...................
HJ is probably talking, if he is talking to GJ, out of some favor owed or consideration promised in the last go around, or perhaps its to establish a baseline of competence against which to compare others. The BBC is reporting that there is a shortlist that was being drawn up during the Spurs / Harry cycle. I expect HJ to be thorough in this and work through whatever list he has and whatever alternates come knocking. There are a lot of potentially viable candidates with agents that will be circling this opportunity for their clients. There's no rush to get somebody on board tomorrow.
Rogers was hardly a big name when you got him in. It seems your board have a good eye for managers so I would go with it and back whoever it is.
What have I got against Jones? Let me see.... 1: Inexperience as a number one. At any league level let alone Prem. 2: We can't **** about. We're playing with the big boys now. He's our very own Terry Connor. 3: We've got that 'difficult second season' coming up. We need quality, and lots of it. 4: Number two at a club that flirts with relegation season in, season out. 5: Oh, he walked out on the Swans. In truth, I'm less worried about that but threw it in.
Knackered, I do understand some of your concerns. He may not have been a number one but he still has lots of knowledge and bags of experience. And I think it's unfair to compare him to terry Connor, he's not him. You could argue same for Chris Hughton, and he did well. I am not saying I would be jumping for low but I trust the board's judgement and give the guy a fair crack.
A friend just phoned and said that they spoke about this on Talk Sport earlier tonight. It seems that Jones is now a done deal.
