Jones in Saints reckoning. Former player could make return to Perth...

....Wigan Athletic assistant Graeme Jones is emerging as a leading candidate for the St Johnstone job.

The 41-year-old has worked alongside Roberto Martinez since 2007 when he joined Swansea City with the Spaniard.

But now after the pair moved to Wigan together, the highly-rated Jones is being tipped to take his first steps in front-line management.

Jones is no stranger to McDiarmid Park as he spent three years there as a player and is still popular amongst the Perthshire club's fans.

Now St Johnstone chairman Geoff Brown is believed to be considering a move for Jones.

Rangers' veteran David Weir, Livingston's Gary Bollan, Ayr's Brian Reid, Arbroath player-coach Paul Sheerin and Saints youth coach Alec Cleland have all been mentioned since Derek McInnes opted to join Bristol City on Wednesday.

But St Johnstone chairman Brown insists the club will not be rushed into finding a replacement.

"We wish Derek well," Brown said. "Let's hope the next manager can do just as good a job. I will make sure we get the right man in. We won't be rushing to make an appointment.

"A quick fix is sometimes not the best route to go down and we will take our time to get a new manager in. We certainly won't be panicking.

"People who are applying for the job will have to realise where we are in Scottish football. We won't be throwing about big bucks on players."
