Covid-19 rules good enough to keep stadiums open, says Bristol City chief executive Sports stadiums in England should stay open to fans despite the rise in Covid-19 cases, says Bristol City chief executive Richard Gould. The Welsh government has ordered all sporting events in Wales to be played without fans after the Omicron variant saw case rates rise. But Gould believes new rules introduced last week will make stadiums safe. Fans at any event with a crowd of more than 10,000 must be double vaccinated or have proof of a negative test. Premier League and EFL to fulfil fixtures FA Cup replays scrapped because of Covid-19 postponements EFL games on 26 December called off because of Covid-19 "If you went to a football game over the weekend you were either double jabbed or you'd have a negative test, so to me that puts you in a very safe space," Gould told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I'm trying to follow the logic of arguments with regards to closing down sports stadia thereafter because there are lots of other sectors or areas who are operating currently without Covid certification. "I'm not saying others need to carry the can, but neither should we carry the can. "When decisions are made they need to be made logically otherwise people will lose confidence in the decision making." Six of last weekend's Premier League matches and 19 in the English Football League were called off because of players either contracting Covid-19 or being close contacts of those who have. On Monday, Premier League figures showed 77% of players have had two vaccinations, a rise from 68% in October. Meanwhile, data collected by the EFL in November showed that 59% of players were double vaccinated, with 10% having had a single dose at the time, while 6% were set to get a first jab. Unvaccinated players deemed a close contact of someone who has tested positive for coronavirus must self-isolate for 10 days under the legal requirements set out by the UK government. However, both competitions have decided to play on over the festive period, with EFL chief executive Trevor Birch saying fans could "continue to feel confident in attending matches" because of the rules in place. "In the event that crowds are stopped from going to sports stadia, as we've seen in Wales, how long is that going to go on for, what is the plan thereafter and is that decision consistent with what's going on in the rest of society?" Gould added. "We've got Covid certification in sports stadia, we are sitting outside, and you just want to be treated fairly across everything else that's going on within the community." https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/59739968
With all of the newly introduced rules, the double jabs and boosters, the negatives tests being applied , social distancing, mostly out in the open air, surely the stadia would be as safe as supermarkets to remain open, to me this is going one step beyond.
Getting ridiculous now. From not locking down soon enough first time around, to total paranoia now from Boris and co and a justified rebellion from his own back benches. Life needs to get back to normal NOW and for all those un-vaxed who want to take their chances going forward with this and future variants, good luck to you. But given hospitals are rapidly filling up with these selfish people and a good 25% of footballers can't be bothered either, then these shortcomings shouldn't affect the vast majority of the UK population who have done the sensible thing and had the jabs. What happened to Freedom Day last July 19th ??
July 19th was before Omicron, there was and is still a caveat that things may change, particularly if another variant presents itself.
Surety as the advice from the government is not to mix unnecessarily, any SC holders who decide not to attend should be reimbursed by the club, otherwise they are encouraging people to go against the medical guidance
there will be more variants over the next 1-5 years! its like the post I DID A WHILE BACK ... You have a pint, from this to give 2 peeps a pint you water it down ... 3 peeps etc etc Virus is a living organism... and will keep evolving to survive ... when infected it multiplies and carries on doing until it is overcome by the body'S anti badies [ misspelt but leave it as seems OK!!] Jabbed already have a partly prepared weapon so number breathed in passed on until replication stops is few. UNJABBED virus replicates unchallenged for a number of days breathing out more and more viruses so more for others to breathe in. Either kills you or makes you ill if amount in body cannot be overcome ... take it SC = ST .. Not exactly encouraging, as people have a choice. When I had my season ticket, I was not able to go on a number of occassions due to shift work, when broke my arm missed a game, and my game partner had flu but he didnt apply for rebate or go to game. I think one of the reasons for a ST is you get a seat, eventually maybe where you prefer / have preference for other games discount saves a wad of money unless you miss loads. However an enforced closure is a bit different!
Season card now, season ticket in years gone by. Missing games now due to being advised not to mix unless absolutely necessary is different to in the past games missed due to hols, illness or the like , that was the whole point of my post. If the EFL and PL have decided to continue as normal, in these difficult times they should at least have the decency to offer a refund to SC holders who follow the official guidance to minimise contact to a minimum. Deciding to carry on as normal is absolutely encouraging people to attend, they say they believe the new measures are enough, despite medical advice to the contrary. Scotland has now limited outdoor events including football to 500 spectators as from 26/12 , a much better approach in my view. edit If they had to rely on POTD I bet they’d close , it’s because they know they’ve already got the money from SC holders that they made this decision, they are taking the fans for granted, if they offered refunds I’d agree there was a choice, as it is come or else we’ll keep your money anyway.
So we’ve got a variant now that is more highly contagious, but if you have a negative LFT at 10am in the morning you can attend a football game as you was negative. Or you show that you’ve been double vaccinated months ago (booster don’t show yet). You’re safe as chips. Stop panicking everyone, the club says you’re safe. Wish I showed the bastard that gave it to me my Covid passport, I would be ok then.
quite a bit of mild jimmy opposites in your reasoning [ I didnt say your p0st was wrong or right ] why? its not so much to do with contact as to being in the correct acceptable state ... like jabbed! in the open air and wear face mask [ when seat belts first came out they were annoying felt "restrictive" BUT NOW just a matter of course.. face masks the same difficult when first had to but now becoming a matter of course and less intrusive..... endeavouring to lead a life closer to that in 2019 is not a bad thing, so "encouraging" is a thing of choice, it is an option. Meaesures are enough? or not enough? I have seen no majority of advice saying what we are doing is wrong, medical advice states quite simply .. being jabbed affords an immense amount of protection of needing to go into hospital, and thus selfishly putting immense strain on the staff and denying people the opportunity to get other treatment! Scotland how much do you know about Scottish football? the biggest losers will be the top 6 or 7 clubs. Some championship and div 1 clubs on a good day might get 3-4k most less than 2k , some 1k is a good crowd most grounds are fairly large so spacing not an issue I have been to about 9 teams grounds that play[ed ] in scots prem ....ICT is a quaint little ground has a good crowd of about 1.6-2k well spaced if you want Ross cty the same! even dundee on a good day has loads space bit of a nickerless over kill really
I don’t know whether you been to the revamped BS3, if you have I ask you how you would manage to get to your ‘open air’ seat without going through the concourse which is anything but outdoors, or in the open. RoD explained the problems around LFT’s and jabs. All reports I’ve heard is how lacks they were at checking too which doesn’t help. As for your point about seat belts, , talk about chalk and cheese. if they had any concerns for the fans, who after all are the life blood of the club they’d offer refunds to SC holders that don’t feel safe going to games atm.
neither would be any good as a seat belt or face mask! yep been through the concourse and that why they ask to come in early if 1 person had to check every card covid id that would add 15 hours to entry time ... so just 15 staff would add an extra hour 30 staff an extra half hour etc etc so usually get there at 230 if that was the case get there about 215! the reality is amongst 18000 A SMALL % id WILL BE FAKE how do you check for that ... say STOP! I need to check your id = a delay or Stop need you to step aside for the fake id Squad to checkyou out ...= delay nothing is foolproof .... dont feel safe? so club refunds everyone who doesnt turn up! because work ... it was raining, on holiday had a cold wife wanted me to take shopping ............ would have to be all or nothing so shut the gate to ALL spectators ... FOR THOSE THAT WISH TO to risk it although jabbed etc [ not unjabbed ] PAY ON THE DAY .....that would be fair
When I watch games over here, and see the news as well, it is very clear that mask wearing in most places is virtually non-existent. What are the rules for masks and should they be mandated at all mass gathering events? To me it's a no brainer and the medical gurus in Canada say your mask should not allow air to escape when you exhale while wearing such a device and if it does then upgrade your PPE. We have a perfect time to do a major circuit breaker until January 2nd when most people are off work for the holidays and are spending time at home with their families. Although this new variant is said to be less dire in it's need for major hospitalizations it's knock on effect to the health care industry, and the other support services, could become catastrophic very quickly. Good health to all and please stay safe.
In general, if people are sensible and self regulate themselves from getting too close to others in shops, restaurants and the like then it has to help. But thousands of people sitting in a sports stadium is likely to be a super spreader if attendees have Omicron, but being double jabbed and boosted I'd take my chance. But as I said in my first post, we shouldn't be facing any restrictions now or in the New Year, otherwise yet more small businesses and travel/hospitality will go to the wall. And we can't keep ****ing peoples lives around every few months when a new variant emerges, otherwise this will never stop, and the country will be bankrupt and will never recover. Sunak is throwing the latest billion £ around like it's Monopoly money. Well it isn't mate, and the likes of us all through paying increased taxes and price rises on food and goods, will be the ones who pay it back, not an incompetent Government.

Mark Drakeford is pretty good, much better than Boris, his measures on the whole are approved of in wales.
This is a really small point in the big scheme of things, but it’s really good to see you using the correct plural of stadium!! Not too many do now.
