Gordon Taylor said this after Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch at White Hart Lane earlier.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17417973

"This can happen on a pitch and [it is] one of the reasons why we insist all youngsters coming into the game have the ability to have heart screenings to avoid this happening."

    I totally agree with Gordon.

We all hope Fabrice pulls through.

Awful what happened. Taylor is right . My brother, who was supposedly very fit - never smoked, looked after himself, etc suddenly collapsed at home. Luckily, his wife was there, as his heart had stopped. Had he been alone, he would have Been dead. Thanks to the attention of a neighbour who, happened to be a retired paramedic, he was taken to hospital alive - revived, but had to have a quadruple heart bypass. The scary thing was that he thought he was in good physical shape and perfectly healthy! So yes, A good idea to have these things checked. If you have a history of heart disease in your family, particularly, then I would urge you to get yourself checked out - no matter how fit & healthy you may think you are.

Dunno if it's been said, but credit your fans for the way they saw the graveness of the situation, and reacted accordingly.

A credit to your club, all who were present.

    Thoughts with Muamba.

Taylor is absolutely right. A young lad in the year above me at school apeared to be the perfect athlete. Like Gareth Bale, he was a monster of man, even as a teenager. He was good at everything and had just been signed to play cricket for Essex. Unfortuately, he died from a massive heart attack at the age of 18. There was absolutely no warning of this and like Muamba, he was for all intents and purposes, a perfect physical specimen.

Fortunately though, Fabrice had the best up to date care yesterday and London chest is a Great hospital; he is in absolutely the best place. Here's hoping he makes a speedy and full recovery.

I totally agree with this, assuming Gordon Taylor is intending to apply such screenings to lower league players as well as premiership players!

The case of Muamba is particularly puzzling.
Here is a 21yr old athlete in top physical condition who undergoes a tough training schedule 7 days a week.
    How can this happen?
There are cases in other sports, especially in Olympic swimming where activity induced asthma happens to some swimmers. They always have a rescue inhaler poolside.

There was a lot of talk about testing on 606 last night and apparently it costs about £35 per person, per year to get this testing done.
Every club can afford that and if there's some reason that they can't, then every person can afford that themselves.
It's just not worth the risk and it should be mandatory at virtually every level.

Gordon Taylor's comments seem to imply that heart tests are mandatory in the English game, when in fact they are not. The reccommendation is that players between the age group 16 to 20 should have one is yet to come into force, although I understand it already applies in Scotland.

At Spurs, the club does stringent medical tests including heart tests on all new signings as part of the usual pre-signing procedures, but also does heart checks on all the playing staff plus management, as part of the pre-season programme.

    Good to hear, SC.
It has to be money well spent.

I heard on the Radio this morning that there are calls for Year 10 and 11 kids that show great athleticism in School games/P.E to have heart screenings. This is a good idea, catch any signs (if they exist) early and as other posters have written, make it obligatory and part of the medical for football clubs when signing any player, of any age.
