Goalkeeper Craig Gordon is set to miss four to six months after undergoing knee surgery, manager Steve Bruce has confirmed.
The Scottish international went under the knife in Sweden yesterday after flying out to see world-renowed tendon specialist Professor Hakan Alfredson.
Bruce told safc.com: "Craig had the operation yesterday and it went well.
"He'll be out for about four to six months now.
"Craig's been following a programme but when the specialist had a look at the knee again, we were left with no choice but to go ahead with the surgery.
"That just sums our luck up at the moment."
Gordon has made 15 appearances for Sunderland this season, with colleague Simon Mignolet handling goalkeeping duties of late.
Mignolet, 22, has made 21 senior appearances in his first season in the Barclays Premier League.
This is bad, but not as bad as it would have been last season. Yes, I know that the Mig isn't perfect, but he's a very good replacement for Gordon, if he can keep his form up.
