Another football great lost to us.

For those more senior amongst us, while not a Bluebird, an absolute football legend of the 60's and 70's.

Even you youngsters will have seen clips of that save from a Pele header in the 1970 World Cup.

His career was tragically cut short when he lost an eye in a car accident.

    RIP Gordon.

    Condolences to his family.

Great keeper and great bloke too - RIP Gordon.

I remember reading a few years back that when they got to the WC final in '70, the Germans were given £10,000 and a VW car each - the England players got £1000 and a raincoat! Banks was apparently on £35 per week back then and drove a Standard 8, paying £3 a week to Leicester as rent for his flat.

Even today when Juventus have confirmed Ramsey has joined them for 4 years on £400,000 per week (and the best of luck to him), it's as well to reflect that Banks never earned more than £100 per week throughout his career and even had to sell his WC medal to support his kids.

I said hello to him and his family at a shopping mall in Florida in 1996. Despite me being another in many thousands who must have spoken to him over the years he was still happy to smile and return the compliment.

    Many wouldn't.

Lovely bloke and one of the best keepers ever.

    Totally echo above tributes.
Still get shivers seeing that save as though it was yesterday.
What a World Cup that was. Just 16 teams.

Brilliant football but ironically England may have got to the final had Banks not got food poisoning meaning the Cat played v WG and had a mare.

we had so much in common,
You were Number 1 (and really did have the shirt) in the World in 1966
and I was Number 1 in our street in 1966
    Coincidence or what ?

Banks playing at Ninian Park but had little to do in an easy win on that infamously bad pitch

Must have been there but don't remember it. Pi$$ed again.

Lesson for Newport there. Get some lorries down to Barry Island. Full with sand and spread on Rodney Parade pitch. That will slow City down a bit.

I remember (as a starry eyed teenager) seeing Gordon playing at the Victoria Ground in 1968. It was the FA Cup 3rd round and it was the first time I’d been away to a top flight ground. We got stuffed 4-1 but I was thrilled to be stood close to a legendary World Cup winner. RIP.
