This is mainly for those who like statistics and what not, and of course the optimists amongst us!

Taken off Sky Sports...(http://www.skysports.com/opinion/story/0,,12038_7225664,00.html?).. the article gives a nice little run down and table of where the team that occupied 4th in the Premier League after seven matches finished come the end of the season

Season............ Team fourth after seven matchdays........Final league position
    1992/93........................Man Utd.......................................1st
    1993/94........................Coventry.....................................11th
    1994/95 ........................Man Utd.......................................2nd
    1995/96 .........................Arsenal........................................5th
    1996/97 ........................Man Utd.......................................1st
    1997/98 .........................Leicester.....................................10th
    1998/99 .........................West Ham....................................5th
    1999/00 ...........................Leeds.......................................3rd
    2000/01...........................Liverpool....................................3rd
    2001/02............................Man Utd....................................3rd
    2002/03 ..........................Tottenham.................................10th
    2003/04..........................Birmingham..................................10th
    2004/05 ...........................Bolton........................................6th
    2005/06 .........................Tottenham....................................5th
    2006/07.........................Portsmouth....................................9th
    2007/08..........................Liverpool.......................................4th
    2008/09 ..........................Arsenal.........................................4th
    2009/10 .......................Tottenham.......................................4th
    2010/11.........................Arsenal..........................................4th
    2011/12 .......................Newcastle..........................................?

As you can see, the only exception to a top 10 finish was Coventry.. who still finished 11th

So, the signs are looking good? We shall see..

All in all though, a positive little table that! :D

The ones that we should pay attention to are the ones that weren't expected to be in the top 4 at the end of the season. The likes of Coventry (who still finished in the top half, I think there were still 22 teams in the prem at that time), Leicester, West Ham, Leeds, Tottenham (2002-2003), Birmingham, Bolton and Portsmouth. They all had finishes that I wouldn't mind this season, especially the ones that finished 5th and 6th. There is hope!

5th position (5.3) is the mean average and 4th position is the modal average...

Should be somewhere between 7th and 10th IMO, which will be a good season.

Also, for the pedantic, pissy lot of you out there who are yet to post, I'm just posting a disclaimer that this should in no way be taken as solid evidence that we will finish top 10, it's just a nice fun little stat for us all to enjoy <whistle>

Anything top 10 I'll be happy with. Though past say the top 6 I'd struggle to think of another 3 or 4 teams that we would definitely expect to be finishing below.

Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal (maybe) are probably expected to be the top 6, then after that it's anyone's position in my opinion. Could be a very close season again in mid table.

7th isn't entirely out the question at all. I reckon it'll be a mater of no more than 5 points separating 7th-12th

But y'know, one game at a time! It's only October, we can review all this again by Christmas <whistle>

edit; also, we've had 11 premier league hat tricks apparently... 4 of which have come in the past 2 seasons.

Can't see us not finishing in the top 10. There aren't any teams outside the top 6 that are that good and we are probably one of the better teams in the bottom 14 so we should finish 10th at least

Before the season started I was thinking in terms of 13/14th but apart from my original top three of United, City and Chelsea I think we could be above any of the others and I'll be disappointed to finish below 7th.

Good omen but last year we were 4th after 11 games. Things can change fairly quickly.

What about the median? Are you going to use the range for spread of data or use the inter quartile range? How about some standard deviation for the variance?
