SUNDERLAND have confirmed the appointment of Danny Philpott as the club’s new assistant academy manager. The Echo reported last week how Philpott was expected to move from Everton to join the Black Cats youth set-up, where he will be responsible for overseeing recruitment.

Philpott enjoyed a successful stint in charge of Everton’s academy recruitment, helping to bring the likes of England international through the club’s ranks.

But he has now agreed to move to the Academy of Light where he will work alongside academy manager Ged McNamee, who was instrumental in bringing him to the club.

“Joining Sunderland is a hugely exciting opportunity for me,” said Philpott, who is due to begin work at the club next week.

“I’m really looking forward to playing my part in successfully developing more homegrown players to integrate into the first team.

“Initially focusing on aligning our recruitment approach from our very youngest academy talent right through to the first team, I’ll also be working with Ged McNamee and Lee Congerton in other areas of the academy to ensure we continue to develop Sunderland as one of the leading programmes in the Premier League”

McNamee said: “We are delighted to welcome Danny to the Sunderland academy.

“He brings with him a wealth of experience, together with a great knowledge of and enthusiasm for youth football, which will benefit us greatly as we look to continue to develop our academy for the future.”

Sunderland sporting director Lee Congerton added: “I am delighted that Danny has agreed to join us at Sunderland.

“I have known him for many years and he is a fantastic addition to our great team of people here.”

I would rather hope he takes McNamees place.

    Just thinking that.

KB gets shoved, McNamee is the one surrounded by suspicions of nepotism yet he`s instrumental in bringing this bloke in. Bit odd this like. Unless they`re related of course.
