Meanwhile, ex-Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia has been announced as the new coach of Scotland’s Under-17 side.

Sbragia was on a three-man shortlist for the post of coach to Newcastle United’s Under-18 team, but the 55-year-old has decided to accept the job with the Scottish FA instead.

Sbragia stepped down as Sunderland boss immediately after the Black Cats’ Premier League survival was confirmed in May 2009, and remained at the club as chief scout until April this year.

Nice enough fella and I wish him well, but I still shudder at the risk Quinny took with the massive investment and effort made in dragging the club back from the brink, only to hand the reins to a complete novice.
