They nominated Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard into the worst England team of all time, what a load of crap that is, the 3 of them are class players.

Let's be honest, they achieved nothing for their national team.

  5. As a trio, they were ****. Pick any two out as a pairing, they were ****. Individually, they were all brilliant.

I don't know about that. Scholes and Gerrard played well together as a pairing. Scholes and Lampard never really played together, but Gerrard and Lampard never worked. I personally think Lampard was the problem, as he wasn't suited to playing a 442, as he never had the all round game of Scholes or Gerrard to play a 442. Lampard was a top player, I'm not knocking the guy, 200 goals for Chelsea is remarkable, but you have to play to his strengths, and a 442 was never playing to his strengths. Lampard was an out and out attacking midfielder, where as Scholes and Gerrard where more complete all round midfielders. They where more versatile tactically

Neither have any English players since 66, and we only won that because we had home advantage, and a dodgy goal that didn't cross the line <laugh>

They won the Tournoi de France in 1997 <whistle>.

  10. Scholes got pushed out to the left and Gerrard had to play the holding role to allow Lampard to be the AM. Can't recall it just being Scholes and Gerrard too often but I bet Gerrard was asked to hold if it did happen.

Gerrard's best games for England came when Beckham was in the side. The two were able to interchange and play CM or RM easily. Its what helped destroy Germany 5-1

So did every England player apart from the 1966 side.

Scholes and Gerrard played together in the middle of the park when we beat Germany 5-1, I've got the tape at home, I've rewatched it a few times. Things started to go downhill when Lampard burst on the scene a few years later, and we tried to accommodate all 3, and Scholes being the more versatile was played wide, which never worked

The real problem was trying to play 442 at all. It's a dinosaur formation that no top team really plays anymore. Had we had a top class defensive midfielder to compliment Lampard and Gerrard in a 3 man central midfield they'd have been fine.

Chelsea done pretty well with Maka, Essien and Lampard in the same team and later with Essien, Lampard and Ballack. None of Scholes, Gerrard or Lampard were good enough holding midfielders and we insisted on a rigid formation that didn't get the best out of the best players we had. That diamond we tried at one point was ridiculous shoe horning of players into the side.

The problem with England's squad is we tend to have just English players in it.

When France were at their best they had players born all over the world. Germany gets the choice pick of all the Polish players. We need to claim players like Messi and Neymar were born in Brighton- sign them up- and we'd have a better team capable of challenging.

    Bollocks.

442 with 2 lines of 4 is dead. 442 lives on though. A far less rigid version.

  20. I think he means a less rigid 442 such as a 41212 (or more commonly known as a Diamond) where the highlight 121 is the midfield 4
