Well, I suppose the thing we can take away from the game is that despite being off the pace, we created great chances, and really should have won comfortably.

We limited Villa to no attempts on target, and looked fairly solid.

    At least we didn't lose.

I think we really do need to purchase another striker. I'd be knocking down QPR's door and trying to get Remy in. We really need a proven goalscorer until Riviere can get up to speed.

    Ratings -

Krul - 5 - Nothing much to do, but should have read a few crosses better.

Janmaat - 6.5 - Fairly solid, looked threatening.

Colo - 7.5 - Good reading of the game and calm under pressure as usual.

Willo - 3 - <doh> Would have been 6.5 because he was fairly solid, but stupid challenges lead to a red card for him.

Dummett - 5 - Some decent crosses, not too bad 2nd half, but he looks exposed against pacey wingers.

Sissoko - 3 - Poor today from him. Poor decision making, poor passing, and lost possession too often.

Anita - 5.5 - Decent work while he was on.

Colback - 5 - Very shakey in the first quarter of the game. Shaped up a bit towards the end.

Cabella - 6.5 - Went missing for a lot of the game, but some good defending at times, and also created some great chances. It's a shame the strikers couldn't finish them off.

Gouff - 5 - Missed good chances again, didn't influence the game enough. But good defensive work and cover at times.

Riviere - 4 - Disappointing after a decent display vs City. He was raped by Villa's CB's. Some decent runs but nothing much to report.

Ayoze - N/A - Missed a great chance, but didn't get much of a chance.

De Jong - 5 - Good movement for the shot on target. Could have done better. Some good defending towards the end.

    Saylor - N/A

MOTM - Colo, if anyone. Good reading of Agonlahor and Wiemann's runs and got out to soften their attacks.

    <laugh> this.

Tash we should have created a lot more against Villa, who were dreadful today. We didn't really offer any threat whatsoever. The defensive lads bar Dummett did well, Colback and Anita were useful, Sissoko had good moments (followed inevitably by atrocious ones), but overall it was just cack.

Pardew should have been sacked over a year and a half ago the man is so thick it's ridiculous.

I agree with your summary Tash, and another good post. I think some of your ratings are harsh though - especially Williamson. He was solid again. The first booking was unlucky and the second one that's his job do that in the 90th minute if they have a man over (which they did). Sometimes you have to take one for the team - especially as a defender.

Disagree with most of that. Willo was better than Colo just unlucky.Colback and Riviere were decent. Cabella you have as 2nd best player, that 's got to be a joke?

I can't see the owner being too happy for long. I'm sorry, but you cannot just play to not get beat every week and hope to sneak a goal. Not when your owner has sanctioned so many offensive players coming in, it just won't wash. I think on this showing Pardew has run the risk of a toxic atmosphere vs Palace. I'm still hopeful that Parrish comes in for him, to be honest - I think if Ashley could get out of the contract and maybe even get a bit of compo he'd take it.

I'm starting to think that even under Souness that things weren't so bad. I've never ever seen a manager install a general feeling on ineptitude into the players as this one. He's only only useless but he's poisoning the players.

The Palace game will supply at least a point and the cracks will be papered over once again...

It was certainly a poor match with very few real chances for either team. We'll have to create (and convert) better chances than that to have any hope of even a mid-table finish.

Yes, some good glimpses from individuals and plenty of time for the new lads to gel into the team, but we desperately lack real cutting edge going forward - and I still almost fill my pants every time we need to defend.

I noticed Pardews comments on cabella it seems to me he is like an idiot manager that puts pressure on his staff constantly. Just shut the **** up about him and talk about something else if your concerned about the media attention he got. The man's a ****ing imbecile.

Early days, but I must say Cabella looks fcking terrible!! At least in his 20 minute cameo SDJ looked like a Premier League footballer, the same cannot be said of Dummett, Cabella, Riviere or Gouffran.

I actually thought Janmaat was very good.

What? He was no worse than Cabaye was in many games, and he still created chances. He created our best chances actually. One that Gouff ****ed up from the corner, the one that he slid through to Riviere, and a decent little timed pass to SDJ for that last chance.

All of our best chances came from Cabella.... Can't really say he was that bad.

Fair point, perhaps a harsh assessment, I'm just disappointed we're seeing a few repeats from last season. It was fairly dire 1st half and we were second best, but Pards doesn't make a sub until the 69th minute. Dummett keeps playing despite clearly being woefully out of his depth at this level, he just offers nothing. At times the front midfield 3 didn't seem to know where they were supposed to play. They were all coming too deep, leaving the forward constantly isolated and being too far behind the play to make the runs necessary to pull defenders around. I honestly think it's down to Pardew not being capable of knowing how to actually play the mystic 4-2-3-1 formation. When SDJ came on we more or less just went 4-4-1-1, with perhaps banks of four being more Pardew's level, and his favoured tactic of "defend, defend, defend some more then give it to our playmaker".

I think we're going to continue to struggle until Pardew leaves and is replaced by someone who knows how to manage modern, offensive players. I'm not even being overly-condemning, I just think this is a fact. We do not look comfortable in a 4-2-3-1.

Interesting stat I just picked up - Pardew's Newcastle United have scored fewer goals than ANY OTHER CLUB IN ENGLAND IN 2014!!

Christ on a bike, how is he still in a job!
