As said many times if the other players had put as much heart into playing as Steady we wouldn't be in L1 next season.
Has anyone at Ashton Gate actually asked him what it would take to make him want to stay? Obviously the salary could be an issue but if he loves Bristol City so much why wouldn't he stay? There are no obstacles in life, just opportunities! Ask him and make him not go away.
Sums it all up in one easy sentence, I wasn't always his biggest fan as I thought he never offered much goal threat and seen games where he didn't look interested too, but he turned my opinion of him around in the last few months. Good bloke and will definitely be sorely missed.
Mike the biggest reasons of all, higher grade football, children and grandparents... 'He added: “I’m looking at all options available but my priority is to stay in the Championship and hopefully move my young family closer to their grandparents if possible.”
It sounds like he moved for family reasons mike. Unless we could of moved up north I don't think he would of stayed. Check out his twitter. He's constantly going back up north every other week to see his family.
I wondered what we would get when he signed because by his own admission he'd played for a lot of clubs by the age of 26 when he arrived. I was surprised and pleased for all the effort I saw whenever he was in the team. Not everyone can be a Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, but the good solid hard working pros like Jon Stead are the basis for all the success any club ever has. Bon voyage and all my best wishes in your career and family life.
Jon Stead a great pro,i will Sadly miss him in the red shirt,i fully understand his desire to move back home, leeds i think he will end up. GREAT PRO will be missed.
Your comment Mike has reminded me of the farcical situation at the end of the 1955 promotion run. Arthur Milton had been signed in March on a short term contract until end of the season. He played 14 games which qualified him for a medal (Third South Champions). He retired then to pursue his cricket career; for youngsters he was the last person to play for England at both football and cricket. When asked a while later why he did not play on another year or so at City, he said "Nobody at the club asked me if I wanted to carry on playing football". Not much change at City then is there!
I expect the new wage structure probably precluded a new deal, even on reduced wages but of course, none of that matters as family comes first (although if nothing else comes up, give us a call).... Thanks Steady, your efforts were much appreciated, good luck to you.
I remember Harry Dolman talking about that a couple of years later his comment was 'We missed out there we thought he was only running down his time in football it never occured to anyone he might want to play for another year as he had never mentioned it to anyone' Looks like there was confusion and misunderstanding all round, perhaps you are right what has changed. Although hopefully the appointment of Burt might just be the missing link and during next season clarity will finally emerge from the fog of confusion. I was a young sprout at the time and I only remember it because I had to ask my uncle what they were talking about.
Star man, class act and a gentleman to boot. Good luck to him, always admired him at Ipswich and with us Good Luck Steady
If you want the right answers sometimes you need to ask the right questions how simple can it be? Never say never, and if I were someone who really wasn't that committed to moving on then a contract that offered me a good realistic base salary plus performance based incentives, such as wins and bottoms in the seat, then I might reconsider my position. But then realistically that isn't the world we live in these days is it?
