As to not derail chazz’s MDT or any others, thought this may or may not have legs. Tell us about your golf adventures, whether it be a hole in one to a golf trip somewhere or anything in between.
My question is, having played ( like most on here I’d assume) football, cricket, rugby, tennis, squash and numerous other sports were, you’re constantly dealing with a moving ball, why the £**£ is it so hard to hit a motionless one where you want it to go!
I've always questioned what happened to me, but here goes.... Playing Brid' Links with some friends, many moons ago now. It's the first hole after the club house going along the coast side, maybe the 10th / 11th. Theres a hole coming in the opposite direction which I think is likely the 18th. No one coming in the opposite direction, in fact no one around at all. There's a copse of trees on the right probably at about 250 yards. My friend drives and the ball fades into the copse of trees... I drive and do exactly the same thing. We walk down the fairway, into the copse of trees and find the two balls. One was resting on top of the other ball. Its something I'll never ever forget and something I'll never ever explain. Maybe gnomes or fairies playing tricks... I've also seen two balls hit each other in mid air at Skidby Lakes being driven from two different tees...
After failing to connect with a ball off the tee I looked my driver straight in the face & told it, quite sternly, “ You missed, you useless twat”. He didn’t miss again.
Cut my golfing teeth in Kuwait in the 80's. No greens, we played with browns, lightly oiled fine sand. Fairways were just scrubby sand so we would carry a square of astroturf to play off, rough was really rough. There'd be a bloke stationed at each brown with a window wiper blade on a stick, his job was to smooth the sand after we'd putted out and it was etiquette to slip him a few coins as we left each hole.
Had to look that one up. Aye, looking back it isn't great. Is it much different to a golfer having a caddy these days?
I started playing about a year ago, completely fallen in love with the game.... And also never been so frustrated playing sport in my life!!
I lived over in Chester for a few years. I used a driving range near Hawarden, almost every time I was there - so was Michael Owen. We’d always exchange pleasantries. Forgot to add - He seemed a really decent lad as well. Pretty down to Earth. Despite countless hours of ‘practice’ on the driving range and more time allocated to practice on the greens with my mates words of wisdom ‘Drive for show’ and ‘Put for Dough’ running through my mind. My game is still as hopeless as ever.
Having watched old ladies plonking it down the middle time after time I decided that a 3/4 swing and 130 straight yards was better than a full swing going 200 yds in the wrong direction. Now, to get that 3/4 swing going straight...
I had 3 lessons a few years ago as my middle Boy (aged 5 at the time )was showing an interest and I wanted something to do while he was part of a big group. I liked it. It was difficult and technical so right up my street. I hit a 7 iron 170 yards. The pro was impressed. Very impressed. I seemed to take to golf quite easily. As I used to box, I am quite used to rotate my body with speed so I could hit the ball further than most. And I’m over 17 stone at the time. I stopped playing as my boy was hopeless and lost interest. The resin for the story is during a warm up for the boys before their lesson, the pro made them. Race to a marker and back. The age range was 5 to 12 year olds. My boy has always been quick at running but it is this day I realised how good he is. He came second. He recently had some county races. Over 60 meters he came first for his age group in the county. He also came first in the 70 meters for a year older age group. It’s on that golf course we realised just how quick he is. He has just won a 2000 meter race against 12-13 year old kids. Aged 9. So I do have a soft spot for the game and intend to take it up again next year. The only thing that stops me is, as a lot allude to, it’s addictive and can take over your life. And golfers never stop banging on about golf…
I got 4 holes in one at lost city adventure golf about 6 months ago! Pure fluke too as I am ****e at golf full stop.
Ive pulled a muscle in my right arm in helping an old lady who was struggling with a large box out of her car ( a cardboard one not a hairy one) hurts like hell so no golf for a while, it’s taking it’s time to heal so I’ve discovered Golf rival on my phone. Found out I’m way better on my phone than holding a club in my ****ing hand lol. I too have seen two golf balls collide being hit off different tees, it’s looks amazing, I live a simple, sheltered life.. forgive me !!!
