So I'm leaving uni in under a months time. Working until I hopefully get into RMA Sandhurst to become an Army Officer in May next year. So I wanted to take the opportunity to go to a few away games near me. Bristol, Southampton, Pompey, Brighton, Palace to name a few. But the fact I have been stuck in Lancaster for a few years means I wudn't have anyone to go with - so whats it like to go to an away game on your own? Is it the done thing? Just wanna know so at least its an enjoyable experience whatever the result Thanks, Hampshirehornet
Hampshire - surely the obvious thing for someone hoping to join the army to do is 'wear the colours'! In other words, put your scarf and/or replica shirt on and you wont be alone
I always spot quite a few in the same position as i go to quite a few away.... sometims we end up talking.. .ther are watford exiles, students etc all over..... COYH!
When I was a student in the Midlands I would often go to games on my own. I ended up meeting a couple who live in Sheffield at most of the northern games so I wasn't on my own often. Mind you, we were in the 4th Division then and anyone who was wearing a Watford scarf was a mate. It could have changed now.
I went to Ipswich and Norwich last season on my own, but as Bolton said, if you're in the Watford family, you are never alone!
I've just remembered that the real name for the Z Cars theme is 'Johnny Todd', so I suppose we could all go to home games on our Todd. TRJ I also went to home games on my todd after I lost contact with people in the Watford area ( bit like our defence, really). I don't go to any games now, of course.
I went all over to away games with the supporters club coaches ,you were never on your own for long! I doubt if things have changed that much!
I also used to love the supporters club coaches where you always were among friends, but in those days you were made to feel welcome by the home fans as well. A Saturday trip to Workington or Gateshead did take it's toll if you didn't get a good result.
I think I may be soon going to away games by myself! Hoping to go to university in Northampton, and if so will be easy to make the more local ones than if it were not...... I.e. Midlands clubs etc! I love the general feel at away games, it's almost as if your meeting that cousin you knew about but hardly met....But when you meet them they're the most awesome person.
Why don't you post on here before the games you're going to, to see if any of us are going too...that way you could meet up with someone and not be alone at all
Trust Our H to come up with the most blindingly obvious yet brilliant idea H you shoud be going to bed early tonight , big day tomorrow
Sounds like a great idea Would be nice to meet you all. Gunna go to bed now and ace my exam in the morning! Shall chat with you all tomorrow!
going on your own is fine - I've done it loads, you've nothing to fear I wonder what the percentage of the gate is of 'singles'?
I'm generally in the same boat and go to away games on my own - last season I went to Bristol City and Cardiff on my own. I intend to go to them and probably Southampton and Brighton too. It's not all bad, you find yourself chatting to other people when there. Cardiff was chatting to some of their fans in the pub after as well!
Haven't been to anywhere apart from Portman Road with Mrs GG for a long time, used to go away on my own lots. From what the others are saying on here it's pretty safe nowadays. I remember stories about home supporters asking people the time to see if they had the local accent or not. A chance to polish your acting skills. 'Why aye, it's aboot two o'clock moi old mucker me lad, ooh arrgh'. Just use a bit of common sense.
