Everyone is calling for the addition of a striker ie, a person who scores goals, to our squad, but Iâm not sure that is the total solution to our problems. I had hoped that Brunt might have found his shooting boots at York, but despite half a dozen full time matches until yesterday he has played too many games without notching a goal to his account. For starters who is going to let us have a decent player, unless we pay a fair sum for him? Our problems are not just about finding a new player. I believe we need to take a good look at the way we play in the final third. Barnet employ Akinde, who we all know isnât exactly what you might believe to be the footballing equivalent of an Epson Derby winner. Despite the manâs clumsiness, he has managed to score more than half as many goals on his own as the Gas have in the League all season. So Barnet must be getting him into the right places and setting him up with balls which can deal with on a fairly frequent basis. So my point is that itâs more about getting players into the right places and supplied with the right deliveries. That is what we do not seem to be doing. The coaching staff will be aware of this problem and working hard to sort it out. Could they do it now please and not wait until it is far too late!!! Our team always looks better with Sinclair onboard. And we sorely need him with Monkhouse and probably Trotman out. He buzzes around the midfield and creates opportunities, but the front men desperately need to get their act together. Too often we are defending games which should have been put to bed well beforehand.
Totally agree we need Sinclair back asap. The midfield misses his pressing and dynamism. However, I'm not wholly in agreement about the rest - I think that we do create plenty of chances but we're just not converting enough of them. Both Taylor and Cunnington have had dozens of chances that they've missed this season and White just hasn't had a look in. It's clear that Brunt is not the answer but there has to be a hungry young league striker out there who isn't getting a look in with his parent club who we can take on loan. We don't necessarily need to spend big to get someone in, but even if we did - how much is 'big' in the Conference?
I read somewhere from a Barnet fan about Akinde that he needs literally 7 or 8 good chances to score 1 goal. So in a way, the build up play at Barnet is great in order for Akinde to score as many as he has.
7 or 8? That's an amazing strike rate for Akinde - he needed 70 or 80 when he was with us Barnet are a good team with a good manager - it's a pity we didn't get him. I think they'll stay top for the rest of the season, but we can have a say in that on the 25th.
Agree... they create loads of chances. They just need to convert a few more. But as long as they're scoring more than they're conceding, I'm happy.
Unfortunately he's 31 and plays for St Neots in the Southern Premier League! I reckon we can do better than that (hopefully!).
