I find this a surprising statistic:

    http://www.statbunker.com/football/btb/index.php?PL=competition&CompID=323&statType=con

According to this, we conceded an average of 1.5 goals per match.

Edit: Got this bit wrong. The fooking average wasn't selected. In goals conceded, on average, we're 12th.

    Goals conceded:

    0 goal games - 9
    1 goal games - 13
    2 goal games - 8
    3 goal games - 5

With the NEW average table, I guess our defence with Enrique, Colo, Willo/Taylor and Simpson isn't so good. Average at best. To me, our defence has never appeared that great. It seems leaky, and I never really have a great deal of confidence when the ball is near our box. Mind you, that large number of matches where only one goal is conceded ties in rather well with the number of draws we got. A lot of them were 1-1.

On another note, goals scored put us at 6th...

    Goals scored:

    0 goal games - 10
1 goal games - 16 (again, with 13 'one goal conceded' games and 16 'one goal scored' games, it highlights the sheer number of draws we had)
2 goal games - 5 (quite a poor statistic which highlights our poor strikeforce last season. If the opposition in a match scored against us even once, we only got enough goals to win in 5 of those games over the whole season)
    3 goal games - 2
    4 goal games - 2
    5 goal games - 2

In fact, looking at this statistics, it makes me wonder how we weren't higher up the table. I guess it's those little differences in results here and there which can dictate how many points we have by the end.

If we'd shared out some goals from the 6-0 and 5-1 we would have had loads more points :(

I think our defence seemed leaky because quite a few of the goals conceded were just through poor defending.

I think you answered your own question :D

Check my updated post. The 'AVG' selection wasn't selected in order, so I mis-read it. We're actually 12th in goals conceded, which sounds more realistic.

Still a lot of the goals conceded were through poor defending. It was usually Simmos/ Willos/ Taylors/ Campbells fault like.

Part of our leakiness might have been due to our offside trapping. According to OptaJoe we caught the opposition offside the most times of any team in the league (can't be arsed to go find the quote).

I saw a stat not long ago saying that we'd only conceded 5 or 6 less than in the relegation season, but obviously had scored far more.

Working from memory (and bearing in mind I only went Away once last year) I can't really remember letting anyone in like that, unless we count the ball over the top against West Brom last game?

We did concede a fair amount, but its the circumstances not the numbers that need looking at. We conceded a lot of silly goals through Simpson backing off to let the ball in the area, but none of the others are innocent of daft errors that let people in (Willo and Colo at Bolton and home to Blackburn, Enrique at Fulham!) that are going to happen.

Plus incidents of our midfield giving the ball away stupidly (Barton Spurs at home, Tiote Blackburn, Guthrie West Brom? Where he was 'injured') don't help. Just trying to keep Tiote on the pitch for more games would help for a start, though hopefully the likes of Cabaye can be trusted to retain the ball better than Nolan and Guffrie when he's out (African Nations Cup this year too right?). More of the ball, less for the defense to deal with, less goals conceded. I'd say 'simples' if that wasn't such a ****ing stupid thing to say.
