The system did the right thing and had to show both the No Goal and the Goal, this distinction decided who was the goalscorer. The system was informing that the opposition had no claim to the goal and that it was in fact the second action and an own goal, Pearce was just an idiot who could not understand such a simple system. There are instances where the ball can hit the inside of the post but it's spin will send it back out into open play, then rebound off another player into the net area, this is what the system was good enough to show the officials and the audience. It's beyond Pearce, I never rated him as a commentator anyway and I think he should go back to commentating on robot fights on BBC2 early evening.
As I mentioned before, I like the system and idea, but once you've used up your challenges within a match/half, you are then completely open to having awful decisions go against you again. I'd prefer a system that stopped it at source, rather than giving teams a brief reprieve before having the face the brunt of human error for the remaining 30 minutes of a game.
I was thinking about referees. If you could eliminate them from the game altogether and have every single decision called correctly 100% (or near as damn it) of the time would you take it? I know I would. Could you live with a game refereed by computers?
Reading back I see that some have suggested similar stuff to my post above... To those who object to every decision being made by technology because it will "hold up the game" - Why would it be necessarily be so? If you play a football video game all of the decisions are made correctly and instantly. If somebody could develop the technology required around the pitch to achieve similar results in a real game it wouldn't slow the game down at all. I would welcome this sort of thing big time. I reckon half of the sides considered amongst the best in the World would slide down the rankings rapidly if cheating was taken away from them. You'd only be able to apply the technology sparingly, say the World Cup and Champions League, due to the expense involved but it would revolutionise football from the grass roots up imo. As in every aspect of life, standards are set at the top. Teams who play fair would have the best chance of winning the big competitions therefore everyone below would have to adapt the way they play if they were to become successful. It would totally change the culture.
But how many times do see pundits and fans arguing that a penalty was given or not given correctly after watching it back 100 times. You can not get every desicion right 100% of the time. There will always be arguements about interpretations made by a video ref. How many times do you see rugby video refs get it wrong, It is quite often. There is a need for technology but leave it at goaline. football is not a video game and shouldnt be treated as one. Why not give up actually playing football and have 11 people representing swansea on a fifa style game and we can all turn up watch a big screen and support the people with the controllers in their hands. As for the cheating side of things then 100% agree with serious bans and sanctions being taken after the game. that is the only way it will stop. Why have the press all of a sudden labeled diving as Simulation. Are we not alowed to say it as it is any more.
