Yesterday's (excellent) goal by Alison yesterday made me think about some of the goals that were scored by goalkeepers over the years. Here's Alison's goal: https://www.skysports.com/football/west-bromwich-albion-vs-liverpool/report/429191 I remembered Schmeichel's goal for Man U against that Russian side but I had no idea he had scored as many as 10 - maybe more: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&r...=08TSSMWI9S4&usg=AOvVaw0RdLMUqxP746NyImkM6qyh I can't remember any of OUR goalkeepers scoring - anyone?
A long time ago but it did happen. Cashley even scored a goal for City on 18 September 1973, with a long clearance from his own penalty area against Hull City on a gusty night. In total, he made 262 appearances, 227 of those in the league for The Robins.
Ray Cashley scored one on a very wet and windy night match v Hull around 1974/75, direct from a kick out from from the East End towards the Park End.
Some of us if a certain age were there for that momentous occasion!! When it ended up in the back of the net most people thought “what happens now”, until the ref pointed to the centre spot!!
The whole game was way different back then and before it was ruined by money I've been watching a lot of the old 'Big Match' revisited on BT Sport and ITV with good old Brian Moore. There are some real blasts from the past in those and horrible pitches in winter. The last one I saw was from January 1979 which was FA Cup 3rd Round weekend with 4th Division Halifax beating Manchester City 1-0 at The Shay in an absolute mudbath. The stadium back in those days had the speedway track around the football pitch and the crowd seemed miles away !
I though Derby's pitch in the season just gone came pretty close to those conditions. Dreadful - I was amazed the game was allowed to take place.
It was bad but nothing compared to how the old Baseball Ground used to be in winter. There was less sand on Weston beach than there used to be on their pitch
I'm probably of a similar age, but I wasn't there, because I didn't start going regularly to games until the 1980s. Through my childhood I was always a City fan - at (Dundry) primary school you were either City or Rovers - there were no 'plastics' back then (or very few) - and I chose City. However, my parents were very skint and not into football in the slightest, so I was not encouraged to go and I wasn't allowed to go with mates due to lack of pocket money. As soon as I was old enough to go (and fund) myself, I found myself working most evenings and weekends in the local pub. It's only when I broke free from the hospitality job 'chains' that I started to go regularly with the lady who later became Mrs R&W - but even then it was only for a couple of seasons (the Terry Cooper and Joe Jordan years). I then found myself working in IT doing night shifts and weekends, with a young family so it became difficult to go to more than a handful of games. I missed out on Cashley's goal - and those 'glory' years of the late 70's .... all those memories Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get to see us in the top flight........?
if the similar age spans 30 years … then likely you are! Can you remember the proper football? Taking up station behind the open end goal in all the games up to about 1987 I only got to handle the match ball once .. night time match late 60's, caught it in mid air and it nearly knocked me over.. must have weighed 5kgs!!!!!! .. was probably off balance anyways ...play couldn't start till they got the ball back!!!! in them days
I am 54 I used to stand in the East End behind the right post (looking at the back of the goal) about half way up the stand
1969 was my first game but it was at Eastville (booooo!) to see the Sags play Peterborough which ended in a 3-1 home win. Only went there as my Uncle offered to take me to football to see if I'd like it, and City were away that week. After that it was AG every week City were home. At my secondary school (Hengrove) and before that at Tyning you were either a City (the vast majority), or a Rovers fan. In addition you were also either a Chelsea or Leeds fan based on the FA Cup Final and replay of 1970. I was City and Chelsea for a while. Then we got bored although I seem to remember the kids that supported Leeds continued to do and they reached further finals in '72 where they beat Arsenal 1-0 before hilariously losing to second division Sunderland in '73. In terms of glory years, it was the early to mid 70's for me. From just avoiding relegation with a 2-0 win at Watford in '71 (I think) on the last day of the season Alan Dicks then started building the team that went on to get to the FA Cup 6th round in '74 and promotion in '76. But like you, I'm not sure any of us will see the return of top flight football in our lifetimes. We've had the opportunities fairly recently, but didn't back the Managers at the time to get us over the line.
Angelic said At my secondary school (Hengrove) and before thatatTyning We have something in common. I was also at Tyning and Hengrove but long before you I guess. Left Tyning in 1958 and Hengrove in 1963. My first game was also at Eastville but in 1952.
