http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/26188/mccarthy-williams-injury-a-blow The bloke is fast becoming a legend with his comments!
“And I saw the comments that their coach [Slavisa Jokanovic] made afterwards as well as what he said it to me, about how they had to be tougher, especially against teams like Ipswich. “I said to him ‘Oh really? As far as I’m aware there was only one team who had a player carried off, and that was Ipswich’. “And then I saw his comments afterwards on The Football League Show about how they started playing like Ipswich and hitting long balls and working hard. “Well, for one, I’d ask what’s wrong with working hard and I’ve had a look at the stats and we murdered them actually, looking at the stats. “Somebody else isn’t happy getting beaten by unfancied, under the radar Ipswich. Somebody else who’s pissed off. Isn’t it great?” Spot on Mick!
Westy Not sure anyone thinks he doesn't have a clue, some question some of his decisions but that does not mean they think him clueless!! As i have said before, some of us were slating him for negative team selection etc and we were kind of proved right because since he has decided to play more attacking football, we have been winning far more games!! Even i am slowly warming to him as a person and trust me, i never thought that would happen!!
If you look at it what Mick has done in 2 years it has been logical and sensible. We were bottom and leaking goals for fun when he arrived. The first target was to sort out our defence, stop leaking goals, toughen us up and to make us hard to beat. That season was purely about survival and through hard work and organisation he saved us quite comfortably in the end. The second season the target was to consolidate and begin rebuilding by clearing out the deadwood and bringing in players that were hungry to perform and work hard. Yes the flair was still lacking but we were getting more competitive in the lesgue and we came to within a whisker of the play offs. This year Mick has encouraged the players to be more attacking and he has introduced some quality in the creative areas but at the same time all underpinned by the hard work pressing side of things. His approach has been spot on so far and no one can really argue against his strategy! The football sometimes has been average to watch but it takes time to get all the component parts to work together and flourish. All the moaning about style although valid was way over the type IMO as I could see the bigger picture like many other Town fans. We are now a proper team and Mick is to be applauded for bringing all this together in a relatively short period of time. It has been quite remarkable but it is no fluke that we are doing so well. Mick is by far the best manager in this league and he has proven this with what he has done with us.
I think those of us who like to see free flowing passing football will always get frustrated with Mick because that sometimes negative football, the errring on the side of caution, not willing to take risks and the willingness to work with players who work hard over talent or enigmas everytime, this is just part of his make up. The frustration comes from seeing what he can get out of players with little talent and also seeing how sometimes he can get his teams playing good football, you think why don't you show the same patience as you did with someone like JET, Taylor and Hewitt as you did with Nouble, Murphy, Mings and Gerkin etc who have all come in with their fair share of criticism or why do you set your team up like than when we can see you can get us playing good football. The football has been a little better this season and for the first time under Mick we actually attack as a team and aren't just relying on a McGoldrick or Williams or Cresswell or set pieces but we have still seen on numerous occassions this season Mick reverting to his comfort zone, all those games where we were winning and ended up throwing it away came from us sitting back and often Mick bringing on another CB rather than beefing up the midfield. There's no doubting given what he has Mick has done a great job at the club, to have kept us in the division was an outstanding achievement and to be where we are now with the players we have and the money spent is superb but there will always be that frustration of what could be given the talents as a manager he has, what could be if you worked with that talented player or if you took a risk during a game. If you look back at his previous clubs these arguments have been a continuous thread throughout his career. I have to admit alot of Micks interviews frustrate me due to his perhaps typical no nonsence manner and sayings but I found this interview very touching and heartwarming:
24th to 4th in 2 years, incredible. We could still fly down the division this season, it's such a close league. However, Mick is definitely the right man for our club. He gets right more than he gets wrong, of course he gets a few things wrong but every manager does! SUPER MICK MCCARTHTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER SUPER MICK!
I see what you're saying regarding the talented players, however Mick wants someone he can trust for 46 games a season. He certainly doesn't want a player who is exceptional one game, then does nothing for five. I think the style of play is improving also.
I think if a player shows commitment/hard work in training then Mick will give them all the support and opportunity possible but if you lack that professionalism he won't pander to work shy divas.........and I'm in agreement with Mick.
In all seriousness, IF Jet was interested and IF he could run, he'd be a Premier league player. Very frustrating individual, has all the tools. Glad he's left! Well Mick sure trusts Bishop/ Williams. Appears he doesn't trust Shaza Ambrose/Henshall especially though with Williams being out they may get their opportunity! Love Mick speaking his mind, pure class.
Thats what i cant stand about the guy, think he is a jumped up arrogant gobshite, sometimes he can be a real cock but others he can be funny. For me though its more the gobshite but hey, horses for courses and if he takes us up.........
Fair shout Spanish, I'll take this as a monumental breakthrough!!! Mick isn't above criticism but he certainly gets more right than wrong and after the mess he's inherited from idiot 1 + idiot 2 he's done a fine job. I love how he keeps problems internal.
