Just read on BBC Gossip that Crystal Palace's Murray (20 goals this season) is wanted by both Aston V. and Bolton at £1m. Firstly, can't see Hollaway letting him go for £1m and secondly, surely he would be tempted to come to Norwich if the price was right for both Hollaway and Hughton? Seems a good replacement for Holt if injured or in an alternating role. Any thoughts?
from what i've seen i don't think he'd cut it in the premier league and is certainly no better than jackson or morison. i think if we are going to sign a striker he has to be a hell of a lot better than both of those and better or at least as good as holt too, otherwise, what's the point?
As Supers said decent championship not a good PL player and no better than what we have. Any signings we now make need to improve the squad as there is already reasonable depth in the squad.
We dont need numbers now. We need quality. I'd happily see us recruit a striker but of real quality not someone to hog the bench.
I fully agree. The last 2 things we need at the moment are squad players and a striker - we already have enough of both. With Holt and Kane in contention for a starting place as the sole man up top and Morison and Jackson on the bench we have more than enough options. If the chance arises to buy better than what we have at a reasonable price then fair enough but how often does that arise in the inflated Jan market? We also have to consider the numbers game. When the squads had to be named we had 26 players for 25 places. Ward was left out and can be left out of the equation as he is out of contract at the end of the season. Between now and the summer Ayala, Vaughan, Korey-Smith, Adeyemi and Francomb return from loan and I don't think that any of them are out of contract this year. The latter 3 are now above age players and would count towards the squad. That leaves 30 players for the 25 man squad. Buy a couple of players in Jan as some people want then that is 8 players you will have to ged rid of before you can buy anybody in the Summer. You can say we will have to sell A or B or C but sometimes it is easier said than done. A player under contract has to agree to move and there has to be a club wanting to take him on. I suspect that recent Managers have wanted to get rid of Chris Martin but he is still here. Logic would dictate that CH will leave things much as they are in Jan, unless suitable offers are made for any of our squad players, which will give him time to consider who he wants to keep and lay the ground for departures/incomers in the summer.
To compare Murray to Morison or Jackson would beg the question would either of those two have scored 20 goals in the Championship this season. When Holt was scoring in the Championship season before last, I don't think even he had scored 20 goals by mid-season, but I stand corrected. Morison had scored 17 goals all season for Millwall before we bought him. IMO he is certainly worth a punt - perhaps Crystal Palace would take Morison in part-exchange?
The point made about needing to off load players because of squad size may be less problematic for us that other PL sides, because we have kept a reasonable wage structure, players could go to championship sides and I presume be financially better off. We don't really have the "Bogarde" problem, so maybe easier to sell players?
No it doesn't, because of the role that the lone striker is being asked to play: it's not simply about goals scored. We don't need a poacher, as we don't play that game.
glenn murray has 9 penalties this season. honestly, he really isn't a good player, he's just having a decent season and nowhere near good enough for our team right now. he is slow and cumbersome - i very much doubt he'd ever play a game for us if we bought him
this is a reasonable point. players like ward and lappin will be on low wages and although they may still have to take a pay cut to leave, it won't be drastic and shouldn't leave us with money-grabbing players, happy to sit on big wages rather than go and play football.
Longsight - you classify Murray as a poacher. Ok, then if you were to suggest a lone striker in the Holt mode then who would that be if it's not Murray? I have watched Murray on the League Show and I wouldn't classify him solely as a 'poacher'. At 6ft 1inch and 13st 3lbs he certainly seems to fit the lone striker role a la Holt who is 6ft and 12st 6lbs.
have you only ever watched him on highlights? if you'd watched him in the flesh over 90 minutes i don't think you'd be keen to be honest. as i say, he's having a good season and i agree, he isn't just a poacher, but he isn't premier league standard. i'd like to think we've moved on from this type of player. we need someone with a bit more quality, especially up front. we need someone who will do all the things holt does but better. glenn murray is never ever going to be that man. were we still in the championship he'd be a player who could do a good job for us but not now. he's not as good as morison in my opinion.
Morison is a headless chicken - 2 goals all season, same as Jackson and has played in more games than Jackson. If Holt is injured - which is likely at present then Morison will have to take his place assuming that we keep the 4-4-1-1 fromation which is very likely. Can't see him proving any good against the likes of Man C. and Chelsea (let's hope he is not needed). And talking of slow and cumbersome...................................
Yeah, I'd agree he's more than a poacher, i think I was just qucikly trying to convey that he is not a great all round striker and certainly no better than morison in that role.
how many games has morison played? three, four? to say he's a headless chicken shows disregard to his ability. he scored 10 goals last season - he also scored against the likes of arsenal (twice) and the then-in-form geordies. you seem to have a 'thing' for glenn murray - i suggest you make your way to selhurst park and watch him because you may very well be a bit disappointed with what you see. anyway, even if we did sign glenn murray (which thankfully we won't), how will he help us beat chelsea and man city??? we play them before january...
I seem to remember moro having a good game at the Sheik towers last season, pulled the two central defenders out of position, had a great chance in first half but fluffed it, (point I'm making is that he got into the position and out ran the defence) and then scored. Seems like we have the fella in place already.
i maintain the same point about all positions and any possible incomings this january. what is the point of a like-for-like replacement? any new signings need to come in and immediately lift the level of the team or i see little point in signing them. there are exceptions such as younger players who could break into the team or possibly competition for certain positions - up front being one if we can find someone as good as holty
I'm personally expecting to see CMS sign for us! Over on NSC (bha forum) many are convinced that CMS will fund moves for 1 or 2 new strikers especially after Poyet said that he's after new recruits up top, but alot are not happy about it! I expect they know that he has suitors in the Prem and could get some money in for a a couple of younger strikers!
we've been keen for some time and were extremely close to signing him in august, so a move would not surprise me at all. he's a very good player, massively underrated by some who clearly just look at stats, and would certainly offer great competition to holt as well as the possibility of partnering him. he does all the things holt does well. he'd become a fans favourite very quickly
