Give Buzsaky a go Features & comment Give Buzsaky a go 30/09/2011 by Rob Brennan One of the many talking points to come out of QPRâs draw with Aston Villa was the poor execution of free-kicks from just outside the penalty area. Adel Taarabt had a go first before being pushed to one side for the remainder of the match, which to be fair to him, he didnât sulk about. The Moroccan is a lot of things but free-kick specialist he isnât. With his poor strike rate from free-kicks itâs not surprising that some of the new signings want to have a go at taking over dead-ball duties. Joey Barton showed during his time at Newcastle that his delivery from set-pieces is excellent but like Jay Bothroyd, DJ Campbell and Alejandro Faurlin, who all had a go against Villa, he missed the target on Sunday. QPRâs attempts would have gone down a lot better at the Rugby World Cup currently being played in New Zealand. It might just have been one of those days. But I think the best man for free-kicks at QPR was sitting on the bench against Alex McLeishâs side. âA dead-ball specialist is vital in the Premier League. In some matches they decide the result.â Akos Buzsaky is a fine footballer. He can pass and shoot with either foot, will get about the pitch and make tackles, conjure up chances out of nothing and he also possesses the ability to take a very decent free-kick. During his time with Plymouth he scored some outstanding goals from dead-ball situations and since joining QPR in 2007 he has scored some wonderful free-kicks, with the one against Reading at Loftus Road in 2009 in particular sticking in the memory. He was instrumental in QPRâs excellent 1-0 win against Everton in August, setting up Tommyâs Smithâs winning goal and kept his place in the starting XI against Wigan but has since found himself back on the bench. He hasnât spat his dummy out but did state in an interview with Nemzeti Sportthat he wants to be more than just a squad player at Loftus Road. Can Warnock find room for Buzsaky? And having scored twice for the reserves in a 5-2 win against Brighton, the 29-year-old is doing everything he can to win over Neil Warnock, who never seems to talk about Buzsakyâs talent. Injuries limited Buzsaky to just 16 appearances last season and his agent, Vladan Filipovic, has admitted that Italian side Leece were very interested in signing the player. QPR decided against letting him go with Filipovic suggesting that Buzsaky was one of former owner Flavio Briatoreâs favourite players. I didnât agree with much that Briatore did or said during his time in W12, but Iâm with him on Buzsaky. A dead-ball specialist is vital in the Premier League. In some matches they decide the result and as long as Buzsaky sits on the bench QPRâs chances of winning tight games are reduced considerably. I donât believe that Warnock will start Buzsaky ahead of Taarabt but if the latter continues to fade in matches after impressive starts, then Iâd urge Warnock to let Buzsaky have a go in his favoured position behind the main striker. He doesnât wear the number 10 shirt anymore, but he still has magic in his feet. www.twitter.com/robbrennan82 http://www.westlondonsport.com/features-comment/give-buzsaky-a-go/
I would love to see Buz at his best and giving the Prem a real go. A fans firm favourite and his song echoing through the stands is powerful. Agree about the dead balls too. Not worse than what we have now and, arguably, better.
But who do we drop and what formation to accommodate buz? If we drop Derry and sit Barton further back, then we lose the effectiveness of Barton going forward. Plus we lose Derry's commanding presence. If we drop a midfielder it'll be for another striker....surely? And buz ain't a winger either. Another article written for the sake of writing an article. Too many wannabe sports journos these days.
Buz isn't good enough to be a first team player atm. He'll get his chance soon enough (it's as though we're spoilt for choice). When he does, his performance will no doubt decide his future.
I somewhat agree. I think we have some better players now but I think we should be using him as a substitute in most games, if things need changing. Also, either he or Tommy Smith should be starting if any of the current attacking midfield players are out, depending on what's needed at the time. We'll see both him and Smith a few times this season, I'm sure.
Whilst we do have better players than last year, some of those given the opportunity this year have improved as they play with better players, Adel and Derry easily spring to mind. Adel could be off during Africa cup if nations in Jan for 4 weeks, so why not give Buzz a few more opportunities during these first few months?
Nice point Ninj. Buz is the obvious understudy for Adel as play-maker. Morocco have the potential to do well in the African cup of tea, so Buz has a chance of a decent run - as long as he convinces at Harlington.
Yeh, injuries and suspensions will probably give Buz a chance to start - and he could well come on as sub tomorrow. Thought he played well against Everton, and read he did well for the reserves this week, so he can't be far away from a game again.
When Taarabt or SWP are out I think it has to be Mackie/Smith. When one of Derry, Faurlin or Barton is out then Buz is the best we have right now.
It could work Northy if they brought in a rule that you can bring a player on just to take frees like they have in the NFL. We desperately need someone who can take a free-kick. But he needs to be a good all-round player on top of that at this level.
