I've seen a lot of threads and posts about formations/tactics/lineups for next season, and one thing has struck me... How many people are leaving Guly from their "plans". What is it about him that has all of a sudden caused people to forget about him? And does he have a future at the club? Just curious on everyone's thoughts
I put him in my starting lineup on one of those threads. I think he's more of a forward than a midfielder and he could have a good partnership with Lambert. I reckon a lot of people might have left him out because it's hard to put him and Barnard in the same team. Barnard on the bench for me though, as I rate Guly very highly.
Guly seems to start slow. He'd be great coming on from the bench and be ready for the winter when injuries start to hit. I do rate him but would put Connolly ahead of him. Tough one.
The problem with Guly is that for every great bit of play he produces, he has to go through 10 bad bits of play to get there. I've watched him several times last season and he can have a terrible match, have poor touches, give the ball away many times, can't shoot on target and then he'll score an absolute blinder of a goal or he produce some amazing Brazilian style skill and set somebody up to score. It is frustrating because if he was more consistent, he could potentially be our best player!
I rate him very highly, in spite of his tendency to drift out of games occasionally. I've just checked last season's stats and he was our third highest goalscorer on 11 goals, after Ricky and Barney and ahead of both Lallana and Chamberlain. Considering he probably had less starts than any of them that's not bad going, and as I recall at least one of those goals towards the end of the season broke a deadlock at a vital point in the game. He could well become a Saints legend imo.
The reason Guly gave the ball away so much last season is simple. His vision and his brain is one step ahead of some of our average players he can see where to play the ball but the others can`t and quite often were not in the correct poss, He will do well in the C/ship I am 100% sure of that. Now we have Cork who I hope will play in centre mid and not neg backpass Spiderman Guly should be given a free role behind the two front men.
I like Guly, but more importantly so does Nige. He's skillful and inventive and I think he'll start against Leeds.
He was like Waigo, slow to get going but once he did, most defences struggled to cope with his unorthodox style.
i agree with lambden but think he is much better than waigo - we are really gonna need him for his unpredictablility
If his head is on straight, he can be awesome. Unpredictable, but not in a Waigo way, better than that. He is also a very good athlete and when he wants to can harrass defenders to hell and back. I just wonder how many times he'll be up for it. He's one of those players that you just don't know if he's up for it when he steps on the pitch.
Working out my starting 11 makes it very difficuilt to both include him, or leave him out. I think he is very very important to us, but wouldnt start him over perhaps lallana, oxo or up top instead of barny and maybe connolly :S IMO i prefer him how he is regularly used.... 2nd half sub. Lots of energy and big impact
Rate guly very highly, certainly think that there is a place for him in the team but it's hard to deny barney a place to be honest! Think guly and lambert played very well together when they were partnered last season! Someone remind me how we managed to play lambert, guly and Connolly in the last game of the season, were we playing 4-3-3?
I rate Guly. He's deceptively quick because he's got such a rangey stride, and he does (usually) hassle opponents and isn't afraid to put a shoulder in. He knows how to find the net too. It's a conundrum because Barnard is excellent and Connolly looked like he was getting back to business last season too! I'm interested in what will happen next season. He's got the skills to step up and be a legend, but I feel as though some of fans could turn him into the new Puncheon if not.
Guly is what he is sometimes good sometimes not so good but overall i like him as he brings a different dimension to the team and with him and the other three strikers who are all different in style we have good options and combinations at our disposal
The thing is that Guly is never poor for the whole time he's on...out of the blue he creates something for himself or others. Great to have on bench and, on form, to start.
