Who, in your opinion, are the five best and/or worst Derby winners of all time? My top 5, in no particular order, are; 1- Sea The Stars (the best by a mile) 2- New Approach 3- Lammtarra 4- Sinndar 5- Galileo My worst are; 1- Sir Percy 2- Quest For Fame 3- Benny The Dip 4- High Rise 5- Oath A lot of very ordinary horses have won the Derby and it definitely isn't the greatest race in the world, not by a long way.
Well I've only been into the racing for about the last decade so I'm choosing from a very narrow era but from that era my top three would be 1. Sea the Stars 2. New Approach 3. High Chapperal Torn between Galileo and HC but have to give it to HC purely as he proved himself as a 4 yo whereas Galileo did not. The worst would have to be Kris Kin in my opinion, worse than even Sir Percy I'm afraid. A Fallon power packed finish if ever there was one.
Best Sea Bird, Mill Reef, Shergar, Royal Palace, Generous Worst Oath, Benny The Dip, Snow Knight, Kris Kin, Erhaab.
Always wondered why Sir Percy has come in for so much criticism for a horse who beat Dylan Thomas in a Derby and was second to George Washington in the Guineas? He never trained on as a 4yo but upto his Derby win he did very little wrong! Sea The Stars for me is the best - purely for his versatility & the six runs in six months - worst for me would be Kris Kin!
Best 1)Sea Bird 2)Golden Fleece 3)Mill Reef 4)Troy 5)Nijinsky Worst Far easier to pick as there have more poor winners than good. 1)Kris Kin 2)Benny the dip 3)Oath 4)High Rise 5)North light Could go on and on.
