Today's match made me think about my first ever trip to Priestfield with my Dad. I was very excited, kitted out with scarf, rosette and rattle. Remember them? A guy used to stand on the corner of Priestfield Rd selling
rosettes that were pinned to a large wooden board. He used to shout " Wear the colour! Weat the colour!"
I was expecting to see England keeper Reg Matthews in goal for the Sky Blues. No one had told me he had
been transfered to Chelsea earlier that season. I had seen him in my Charles Buchan Football annual, and
listened to his England games on the radio, so was choked I would not be getting his autograph that day.
The result ? Gills lost 0 - 1 . A sign of things to come no doubt.
