I see in the post match vs millwall on the OS that hessy is still thinking about who our captain will be this season which to me seems like he's going to change it. imo I would have Lawrence as captain as he is a leader and showed how much experience he's got last year. Thoughts? COYG
Lawrence would also be my choice as captain, I think I have seen some where a suggestion towards Frampton, although he probably is a suitable leader, I think it would be unfair at this stage without actually having earned that role in a Gills shirt.
I don't pretend to know the thoughts of Hess but, yesterday Frampton and Lawrence both played and Frampton got the band.
Lawrence would be my pick, but it's not my choice. Maybe if not captain he could be club captain much like Bentley was. Having read Hessy's comments on the OS it does seem like it'll be Frampton though.
out of three players i would pick from ie...lawrance, frampton & lee "although all three would be able to do the job for me" i think hess wil go for frampton, along with the fact he talks and organises all around him better than others! fuller being captain previously was more down to his commitment on the field & work on the training ground...but to me thats not what a leader(captain) is only about for us to win promotion one way or another! sorry to say, but i would not even pick barry fuller for vice captain either. even though i feel charlie lee should be given one of these roles...i think we need to give matt lawrence the vice captain role so he has more of a role/position to keep him on a high all the way through the season, along with his experience and drive!
What does a captain actually do in modern football, apart from call the coin toss? In the past the captain used to be essentially a manager on the pitch taking improtant tactical decisions, very much like in modern cricket. But the in the modern game, with almost constant input and encouragement from the manager, coaches and the rest of the backroom staff on the touchline the role, in my opinion is pretty redundant. But to the actually point I feel that taking the armband off Fuller would seem harsh, but I do acknowledge it had a negative affect on his form, but it seems Hessy wants his own captain rather than the one he inherited so Frampton seems a logical choice, plays in the middle of the pitch, very experienced, so why not him
For me the captain next season should be Frampton, against Millwall he bossed the team and was very vocal. Whereas lawrence would be a good captain, i think that he is a bit quiet on the pitch and believe too that he should be club captain like Bentley was.
I think it should be Lee and we could have King as club captain, but what will this do to Fuller as it will push him out and then he may want to leave, just hope that if there is a change that it don't affect the team.
The thing with choosing a captain, apart from the obvious attributes they need, is that they need to be the first name on the team sheet each week. I think that could rule out Fuller as Fish could play there, Lawrence and King because of injury concerns, Frampton possible if he is likely to play every week, but I think the most likely candidate is Charlie Lee. Plays in an ideal position for a captain, very vocal, and leads by example. He'd be my choice.
Can see how you look at it Vinney, good reasons for your choice, could not disagree with you on that. as you see earlier I made a mistake as i put lee as team and club captain but as you see I have corrected it now.
it all depends on how important seasons in a gills shirt is to hess. if he isnt worried about giving it to a new signing then it has to be between lee and frampton. lawrence is in with a shout but is he gonna play every game given there will be time when we play many games in not a lot of time. for me it will be frampton as i can see lee maybe being a bit hot headed at time and frampton has the experince and personally i prefer it to be a defender for organising defending set pieces
I know he does not have the experience but I can see him growing up to be the star in out team, jack Payne . But I believe hessy will chose frampton
Jack Payne is future captain as long as he stays at Gills as he is great but is not ready to lead now even though he is a old head on a young body.
Looks like it will be Frampton (shows how much I know) http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/sport/2011/july/25/gills_captain.aspx?
Vinney's got it right, the captain needs to be the first name on the team sheet which in the past it could have gone to someone like King before his injury. There would be no use in giving the captaincy to someone like Spiller for example as it is unlikely he will be in the first team for the full season and I wouldn't give it to Jack Payne. Given time he will be a good leader but at the moment he is too young and remember what it did for Crofts; his form dipped dramatically since Jepson gave it to him. The same could be said for Fuller in terms of poor form (with the exception of 08/09) but with his injuries he, like King, are maybe not as "committed" when going into tackles or being a defender in general. If we had signed him last year like Hessy has said I would give the captaincy to Frampton. Someone who can shout and command the back line and the guys in front of him but I feel it would be unfair for someone like Lawrence who has already had a year with us and would have run away with the player of the year had it not been for Cody's goals last season. Just something else to think about. If Hess is thinking about choosing another captain, will this mean Fish will be played instead of Fuller? Could he maybe do a Crofts' and leave us through the season?
On balance it's looking like Frampton is the best option - experienced, vocal and an organiser. I don't think time spent with the Gills is necessarily that important... just as well as he's liked and respected by the rest of the squad.
I see a lot of people mentioning Jack Payne but I personally don't believe he has what it takes to be a captain. Yes he is young and very talented, gets around the pitch and breaks down the play, but he just isn't a vocal character. Captains need to be extremely vocal on the pitch whilst leading by example. Payne does lead by example don't get me wrong, but even at a young age future captains are vocal.
Frampton is to be captain and Lawrence is going to be club captain... http://www.gillinghamfootballclub.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10416~2402635,00.html?
Correct decision in my opinion. Seems to be a natural, vocal leader on the pitch. Hopefully Barry's form can improve and we'll have a nice dilemma of who to play at RB next season.
