Gillingham Gills.jpg Vs 150px-Colchester_United_FC_logo.svg.png Colchester United Match Day Thread

    3rd August 2013
    3PM- Priestfield Stadium

This is the First Match Day Thread of Gillingham’s Sky Bet League One 2013-2014 Season. This is the place to post all of your Team Predictions as well as Chat before and during the match. This thread can also be used to post Updates on the match. You can also post your Views on the match after the game and discuss the performance with others. I may write my own report if I have been to the game and I will give my overall opinion on the result and what I thought of the individual performances of each player.

    Team News
Gillingham should have most players available, the only possible doubt is Myles Weston who has been injured but he may make it back in time for the first league game against Colchester United.
Colchester United should have a full squad to choose from. New signings Craig Eastmond, Ryan Dickson and Sanchez Watt could all their debuts following their permanent moves to Colchester United.

    Past meetings
Gillingham don't really have a great record in their last 6 matches against Colchester as they have lost 4, drew 1 and won 1 and that 1 win was in the Johnstones Paint Trophy.

    26 Nov 2005 Colchester United v Gillingham L 5-0 League One
    12 Aug 2008 Gillingham v Colchester United L 0-1 Carling Cup
    07 Oct 2008 Gillingham v Colchester United L 0-1 Johnstones Paint Trophy
    18 Aug 2009 Colchester United v Gillingham L 2-1 League One
    01 Sep 2009 Gillingham v Colchester United W 1-1 (4-3) Johnstones Paint Trophy
    23 Jan 2010 Gillingham v Colchester United D 0-0 League One

Our last meeting was in 2010 which ended 0-0 however we don't have a good record in the last 8 years however Colchester are not as strong now and are one of the teams who may struggle this season under ex Gills player Joe Dunne.

Our record over Colchester United does not show one team dominating as we have won 28, drew 25 and lost 26 so we have a level record and this game may be yet another close game.

    The Current league table
All teams are on 0 points as the season has not started.
Gillingham start the game 9th with Colchester United in 5th, I expect both teams would be happy if they finished the season around the same place that they are starting the season.

    My View
I reckon this will be a close game, this season is not going to be a walk in the park as there are some real quality sides in this league and although Colchester United may not be one of the bigger sides they do have some younger talented players such as Freddie Sears and Sanchez Watt. I would be happy with a 2-1 win to start the season just to show that the poor Pre-Season can be forgot about and I also believe that we are good enough to win this game.

    The Score and Scorers
I think that the score will be Gillingham 2-1 with Cody McDonald and Danny Kedwell getting the goals for the Gills and Sanchez Watt getting the goal for Colchester United.

My prediction of the team that will play against Colchester United is as followed.

    Nelson

    Fish
    Legge
    Barrett
    Martin

    Gregory

    Whelpdale
    Linganzi
    Allen

    Kedwell
    McDonald

    Subs
Howard (I reckon he will be signed by Saturday)
    Davies
    Muggleton
    Dack
    Lee
    Akinfenwa
    German

This does show that we could be a bit short unless 1 or 2 are signed because if Weston is not ready to play and also if Lee was to go then we would have to put 2 of the younger players on the bench so I think that one or two signings could be needed so that we have that much needed depth in the team.

He did post on twitter about hospital, this is awful news if he has a bad injury as we already know then we will have problems as we just don't have enough depth, if he and Weston are out then we just don't have enough midfielders as we will only have 5.

Bad news but I doubt he would have been starting any games anyway. Davies can play in the holding role and I expect a permanent deal for Harry Grant to be dealt with swiftly. Don't forget Hessenthaler and Haysman have both looked good in pre-season and I'm sure they can make the step up.

Hessenthaler , haysman and grant might be good youth players but They have No league experience . I doubt any of them will play this year .

I think that team will change a bit now as Allen looks like he will be injured, don't know what it is but hope it is not too bad.

Team I expect it will be is

    Nelson

    Fish
    Legge
    Barrett
    Martin

    Gregory

    Whelpdale
    Linganzi
    Lee

    Kedwell
    McDonald

There is reports that Martin Allen has dropped a hint that Charlie Lee is on the way out.
    @BenCCroucher
'Asked Martin Allen if Charlie Lee was in his plans. "He's gone to Southend hasn't he?" Cue confused looks around the room'

    https://twitter.com/BenCCroucher

    Also this was said.

    @BenCCroucher
'Allen didn't give his Sat team away but mentioned Akinfenwa and German up top so be interesting to see if McDonald now starts!'

Even though this was said I still believe that we will see Kedwell and McDonald as it may just be a tactic so that the opposition believe that we are starting Bayo and then we don't but then he may start them as he may want to see what they are like together.

Charlie Allen has just told me that it is just a minor injury.

    @CharlAllen
@HOADIE_OFFICIAL 'just minor. Shouldn't be a bad one'

    https://twitter.com/CharlAllen

I am not sure what to think yet as he is saying shouldn't be a bad one so from this I may be reading into it but I think that he is not sure yet as he is saying it shouldn't be bad so he is not 100% yet.

Looking forward to seeing the League Two Champions making their League One debut tomorrow. Hope it will be a good game to watch and a win for the Gills. Also hope that Danny Kedwell is among the goals on his birthday.

Gills 3 v 1 Colchester that is my prediction for the brb world renowned prediction league. (only because I never predict a Gills loss)

Truth is having watched a lot of the pre-season games I have a few concerns, 1. our championship winning defence have looked really shaky, 2. our forward play has been lacking ideas and penetration. (so apart from looking decidedly league 2 we're fine)

remembering our league 1 (league 2 as was) side from the 90's I don't think the current team are up to the same level of skill, fight, determination, so come on lads go out there tomorrow and make me eat humble pie.
