    17th August 2013
    3PM- Priestfield Stadium

This is the First Match Day Thread of Gillingham’s Sky Bet League One 2013-2014 Season. This is the place to post all of your Team Predictions as well as Chat before and during the match. This thread can also be used to post Updates on the match. You can also post your Views on the match after the game and discuss the performance with others. I may write my own report if I have been to the game and I will give my overall opinion on the result and what I thought of the individual performances of each player.

    Team News
Gillingham only have one player who is ruled out for this game which is Matt Fish who is likely to be out for the rest of the season after he suffered serious damage to his ACL in the opening game of the season against Colchester United.
Brentford team news will be posted as soon as it's available.

    Past meetings
Gillingham have a really mixed record against Brentford. The record stands at 32 wins, 20 draws and 36 defeats, so it is not the best record
Our recent record is not that good either as we haven't won any of our last 4 meetings with Brentford and our last win against them come back in 2007 so we have not done really well against them for a whole. Our last meeting with Brentford ended in a 0-4 defeat so hopefully we don't suffer anything like that again after the result against Wolverhampton Wanderers last Saturday.

    31 Mar 2007 Gillingham v Brentford W 2-1 League One
    20 Dec 2008 Gillingham v Brentford D 1-1 League Two
    28 Mar 2009 Brentford v Gillingham D 1-1 League Two
    26 Dec 2009 Gillingham v Brentford L 0-1 League One
    06 Feb 2010 Brentford v Gillingham L 4-0 League One

    The Current league table
Gillingham are currently 22nd in the league after 2 games with no points.
Brentford are doing much better and find themselves 7th after 2 games with 4 points having won 1 game and drew the other game this season while Gillingham have lost both games.

    My View
This is a really tough game as Brentford have a team of real quality which will make it really hard for us. With our bad form and Brentford doing well it does look like another defeat, however I believe we have enough in us to at least draw the game or even snatch a win by 1 goal.

I am hoping that we play much better than in our first 2 league games and the cup game against Bristol City as we know that they can do a lot better than they have been playing. It is important that we stop playing all the long ball as it is not working and this is why we are not getting goals as we need to play the ball on the ground, hopefully Martin Allen has identified this as the problem and changes it for the Brentford game because if we play the same against them as we have in the last 3 games then we will lose again.

Hopefully we change the team a bit to suit the strikers as the reason that Cody is not doing well is because he is not getting any service and he will not score many if we continue to play how we have started this season, I think that Dack should start in place of Gregory and then we should play Linganzi in the holding position as I have a feeling that Gregory and Linganzi don't work well together in the same team.

    The Score and Scorers
My head is telling me 1-1 but my heart says 2-1 to the Gills with Kedwell and Dack getting the goals for us and Will Grigg getting the goal for Brentford.

At the time of writing this, there are no new players(in spite of lots of unsubstantiated stories on the FR site) and I fully expect us to lose, as with the same players that were on duty at Wolves ( and to a certain extent Bristol city, who got beaten by Coventry, Sunday, who had next to no fans there and a young team ) where we weren't at the races. I can't see how MA will improve the performance in a week, to enable us to give a decent account of ourselves against one of the favourites for promotion. I shall still go, but without much hope.

I'm still feeling positive about Saturday and looking forward to the game. I predicted a 3-2 win in the prediction league and I see no reason why that is not possible.

We have a defence who are more than capable in Legge, Barrett and Martin, while Harryman from what I have seen looks more than capable. I have no problems with Keds playing deep we just need to sort out other parts of the midfield and our front line.

To do that MA has to play the right players to suit the tactics. Hoofball, we need Bayo and Cody to start together. If we play it on the grass, then a formation with more pace. I wonder if Weston and Cody can link up in a pacey front line?

Ensure Whelpdale starts after his deserved sideline following on from the Colchester game. Drop Gregory. I want to see Lee start again, we are going to need the pitbull out there.

I think that the team should be

    Nelson

    Harriman
    Legge
    Barrett
    Martin

    Linganzi

    Whelpdale
    Dack
    Lee

    Kedwell
    McDonald

Swap Dack for Keds and put Weston or Bayo up front with Cody dependent on tactics. Keds is to much of a workhorse machine to spend time supplying Cody's needs.

Yeah I do agree, it would then leave Kedwell free to do what he wants, however I am not sure that Martin Allen will do this, should you tell or me? ;)

I think that if we did play Kedwell in attacking midfield then Weston upfront with Cody would be a decent move or even German.

Time for the ex-Brentford lads to step up for this one. At the moment Nelson is the only one who has given a decent account of himself. If I was picking the team then I would go for this:

    Nelson

    Harriman
    Davies
    Barrett
    Martin

    Whelpdale
    Linganzi
    Lee

    German
    McDonald
    Weston

But I'm not the boss so stuff what I say <laugh>

I agree 4 4 2 is the formation. I don't agree with idea of Kedwell having a free role. We need to have width and get the ball on the ground and switch from coming forward from the flanks but also come through the middle and make other teams commit to challenging... just need to open teams up and not be afraid if the ball in the final third.

    My team would like this

    nelson

    Harriman
    Legge
    Barrett
    Martin

    Weston
    Linganzi
    Lee
    Whelpdale

    German
    kedwell

If you saw German against Bristol City, you would realise he is out of his depth at the moment. He definitely needs more experience ,so it may be worth loaning him out,as Brentford did last season. If you want Kedwell to play up front ,he needs someone like Burton was to play with him. Its no good Cody playing with him, because as has been said, Kedwell can't make chances for Cody, that needs Bayo, and Kedwell wouldn't be much use with Bayo either. The only partner I can see being any use with Keds, would be the unpredictable Weston, or Whelpdale, who I thought played very well when he came on as a striker at Wolves last week.
