Beardsley and Bruce both came down from Newcastle for a trial. We signed Bruce and converted him to a Centre Half but turned our noses up at Beardsley. If you read the article he joined Rouen as a defensive midfielder and in 05 we would have had Hessenthaler, Smith, Shaw, Pouton, Spiller, Saunders (although may have had his broken leg then) and Carew who could play centre mid so we probably said no because we were already covered in that position. Then again we got relegated in 05
