Fabian Giefer in race against time to make Bristol City debut in crunch clash at Nottingham Forest By a_stockhausen | Posted: January 19, 2017 please log in to view this image Fabian Giefer could complete his move to Bristol City today We are engaged in a race against time to ensure goalkeeper Fabian Giefer is available to play in Saturday's crunch Sky Bet Championship relegation showdown at Nottingham Forest. The 26-year-old German's loan switch from Bundesliga club Schalke until the end of the season is set to be ratified later today. But City still have to secure international clearance for the former Germany youth international before he can be considered to face Forest at the City Ground this weekend. Eager to exit Schalke in pursuit of regular first team football, Giefer has passed a medical examination in Bristol and will train with his new team-mates at City's Failand training headquarters today. Should all the paperwork be completed in time and international clearance be granted, Giefer could make his Championship debut in the east Midlands in a contest City cannot afford to lose if they are to avoid being dragged into the bottom three this weekend. Richard O'Donnell's impending transfer to Championship rivals Rotherham United is expected to go through today, while Robins head coach Lee Johnson is planning to send former Bayern Munich stopper Ivan Lucic out on loan this month as he reshuffles his goalkeeping resources. All of which will leave Giefer to contest the number one jersey with current first-choice custodian Frank Fielding. Former England Under-21 international Fielding has established himself as a regular selection ever since mid-September, but he could drop to the bench at the City Ground in the event Giefer becomes available for selection. City's fourth signing of the January window has not been recruited to sit on the bench and the 6ft 5inch former Fortuna Dusseldorf gloveman is hoping to impress between now and the end of the season and earn a permanent contract. http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/fabian...ngham-forest/story-30069392-detail/story.html
Goalkeeper recruited from German Bundesliga side. City have completed the signing of Schalke 04 goalkeeper Fabian Giefer on loan for the remainder of the season. The 26-year-old will train with his new team-mates for the first time today, in preparation for Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship trip to Nottingham Forest. Giefer can only feature once international clearance has been received. Head coach Lee Johnson told bcfc.co.uk: “Fabian has come in to compete for the number one jersey. “He’s certainly got a good pedigree, having played in the Bundesliga, and we hope he has a successful spell with us.” Giefer began his professional career at Bayer Leverkusen, where he predominantly played for their second string. In December 2010 he appeared in the UEFA Europa League as Leverkusen overcame Norway’s Rosenborg 1-0. Giefer joined Fortuna Dusseldorf in Bundesliga 2, where he became a regular. His performances prompted Schalke 04 to come calling two seasons later. He has been number two to fellow German Ralf Fahrmann at the Veltins-Arena and now gets the opportunity to stake a claim at Ashton Gate for the next four months. So, we now have the keeper, Striker, defender and CM that we were after. No excuses for LJ now. Return to winning ways needs to start this Saturday
Apparantly 100% AGREE he has to produce from now,he has had everything given to him on a plate. No more excuses. No other manager has had what LJ has been given,he is one lucky boy.
Bloody Hell looks like we got a good un here watching that video, looks a million times better than what we have.
Perhaps the shining light our leader has had his wings clipped, but just may be he will be able to fly again and do no wrong
Don't be silly he will find something to complain about. Probably won't like the fact that we've lots of foreigners now
Beware the video highlights reel! Most players would have enough good footage to make up a 5 minute video that makes them look like a World beater. ...Having said that, and without wanting to be a downer, his record seems good and is spoken of well. I'm inclined to believe we've got a good'un here - I just hope that we don't have any issues with communication.
I was just thinking about a player that did really well for us going back a few years, by all accounts is out on loan at Liverpool......not had many games, I believe he's still on the books at Spurs.. Steven Caulker anyone? Surely not become a bad player over night.......wonder if it's worth a cheeky bid!!
He's at QPR now, but doesn't seem to be playing - not sure if he's injured or just dropped. I think he's a remnant of QPR's wild spending, so is probably on a hefty contract he wouldn't be willing to walk away from. Also, not sure if centre back is our most troubling area (a good right back might be nice).
