    http://www.nufcblog.com/2011/02/27/newcastle-open-negotiations-for-lilles-gervinho/

There’s some good news today coming from French sources, that Newcastle United have already started preliminary negotiations with French club Lille to acquire 23 year-old Gervinho. The reports are saying that the famous Newcastle club have opened tentative negotiations, as they look to tie up the £10M rated Ivory Coast International.

And with Cheick Tiote committing himself to the club on Friday, you have to think that our midfield dynamo can persuade his Ivory Coast team-mate to join him on Tyneside – we hope so anyway.

Gervinho can play on either wing or as a striker, and from what we can tell he looks like he could become an excellent buy for the Newcastle club.

Gervinho is said to be one of a number of striker targets being considered by Newcastle, but he has to be near or at the top of the list, for Newcastle to start negotiations now.

This is not the first time Newcastle have been linked with the Ivory Coast International, who has 19 caps and 5 goals for his country, and who was also interesting other clubs last month.

Lille wanted to keep the player through the end of the season, to help them win the French League, and the side are currently second top of the French league, just one point behind Rennes with a game in hand. Lille entertain Lyon this afternoon, who are in 4th place.

Gervinho has scored 23 goals in 53 games for the French club, and 10 goals in 21 games so far this season.

Gervinho turns 24 in May, and started his career at Belgium club Bevern in 2005, and moved to French club Le Mans in 2007, before joining Lille in 2009.

The 5’11″ player has over 165 first class appearances in his career, and has scored over 40 goals.

Since his contract runs out in 16 months, Newcastle may be able to get a decent deal for the player, and we’d be surprised if the fee is as much as £10M.

We have to hope that we can tie up one or two of our major targets before the end of the season.

I hope so :D Pacey, skillful striker and after the last few games we do need that man who can finish off games and score. I wont be surprised if Tiote has a role to play if this deal is true :)

Yes please! This is just the type of player we need. He is a great striker and even better winger. I've seen him play before as I live in France. Don't be put off by his goalscoring record, he plays most of the time on the right wing. I'd be happy with either him or Kevin Gameiro. But it is a Sunday so I wouldn't make much of it lads.

    I pray this is true.
If so, then Tiote would be the best thing to happen to this club in years, as I don't doubt his pledge of commitment to the club will help persuade Gervinho to come if he does.

Yeah he's goal scoring record isnt the best but 10 goals in 21 games so far this season isn't bad if he's been playin on the right

  8. I think we should take a look at Sturridge, personally.

I would also love Sturridge, but I honestly think we'd have a bit of trouble. With Drogba most likely on the way out, Chelsea will probably want to hang on to him. And even if they did sell I just think Bolton would get first say on him.

I'd be happy with either Gervinho or Sturridge! Or both ;) Ha

Sturridge would be great on current form however he'll likely stay at Chelsea in the summer. Also I heard the reason he went to Bolton on loan is because they were the only ones willing to pay his reported £50k a week wages.

Heard that Sturridge left City because he demanded 50k a week
Wouldn't want a young player who wants high wages in the squad, rather have gervinho

If so then forget him, Gervinho would be a better option. Tiote recommended after all, so has to be good.

Agree, think Best needs a better partner than Lover and Shola.

I've seen Gervinho play and would sign him over Sturridge any day.

Gervinho has been talked about alot on here but I'd like to see him before I get too excited. Saying that he does look like a good signing

Never happening in a million years. He's already on 80k per week at Chelsea.

Never realised Sturridge was on such so high wages. If he takes a mental pay cut, by all means bring him on board, but I doubt that'll happen. His ego will probably get in the way. I'm preferring the idea of Gervinho over Sturridge a lot more now.
